Australia spinner Matthew Kuhnemann has been reported for suspect bowling action in the aftermath of his team’s away Test series against Sri Lanka, which they won 2-0. According to Cricket Australia, Kuhnemann will undergo a bowling assessment to determine if his action is legal or not.
What happens if Matt Kuhnemann’s bowling action is deemed illegal
The 28-year-old had ended the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka as the highest wicket-taker with 16 scalps. Should his bowling action be declared illegal, he will be suspended from bowling until modifications are made to his bowling action and if he passes another assessment. He can continue representing Tasmania in domestic cricket but won’t be eligible to bowl for Australia in international cricket.
Australia, though, play their next Test in June, which is the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa at Lord’s. Kuhnemann has the backing of Cricket Australia in this matter.
“The Australian team was notified of the match officials’ referral following the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle and will support Matt through the process of clearing this matter,” CA said in a statement.
“Matt has played 124 professional matches since his debut in 2017, including five Test matches and four one-day internationals. He has played 55 Big Bash League games since 2018. This is the first time in those eight years of professional cricket that his action been questioned,” added the statement.
“Cricket Australia will liaise closely with the ICC and independent experts in line with ICC regulations. No further comment will be made by Cricket Australia or Matthew until the matter is resolved,” the CA concluded their statement.
Since making his Test debut against India in 2023 , the left-arm orthodox spinner has played five Tests and taken 25 wickets. He has also played four ODIs having taken six wickets. Kuhnemann, however, has not played an ODI for Australia since June 2022 when the Aussies took on Sri Lanka.
