Shreyas Iyer notified the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) he was unfit for the Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Baroda, starting Friday, and there were media reports that said he had back pain.
However, as per Nitin Patel, the head of sports science and medicine at the National Cricket Academy, the batter carried ’no fresh injury’ and he was ‘fit’.
Iyer was released from the India-England Test series after the second Test due to poor form, although there was no categorical reason mentioned by the BCCI for his absence from the last three matches.
As per Indian Express, Patel wrote to the selectors in an email, “Shreyas Iyer was fit and available for selection as per the handover report of the Indian team after the 2nd Test match against England. There are currently no fresh injuries reported as well after his departure from Team India.”
Last week BCCI secretary Jay Shah had warned centrally-contracted and India A cricketers that non-participation in domestic competitions would have ‘severe implications’. Ishan Kishan, who pulled out of the South Africa Test tour citing ‘personal reasons’, did not play Jharkhand’s final group game against Rajasthan.
The selectors, after the word from BCCI medical team, told Iyer to play Ranji Trophy so that his back gets used to the strain of batting and he can get back to scoring runs.
Shreyas had scored 35, 13, 27 and 39 in the first two Test matches against England. Some media reports said Shreyas had complained of back spasms during the second Test in Visakhapatnam.
