Shikhar Dhawan, who is also fondly known as ‘Mr ICC,’ retired from international and domestic cricket on Saturday (24 August). The former opener posted a video message on X (formerly Twitter) in the early morning, making the announcement. “I am standing at a point where when I look back, I only see memories and a new life when I look forward. It was always my dream to play for India, and I got to live it,” he said in the video.
“I am announcing my retirement from international and domestic cricket. As I bid farewell to my cricketing journey, I have peace in my heart.”

Dhawan’s international career spanned from 2010 to 2022 but he will most be remembered for his performances in ICC ODI tournaments which earned him the nickname Mr ICC.
Dhawan ruled ICC ODI tournaments
The 38-year-old was the top run-getter of the tournament during India’s victorious 2013 ICC Champions Trophy campaign. He scored 363 runs in five matches including two centuries. In the 2017 Champions Trophy when India reached the final, he was the top run-scorer once again. Dhawan scored 338 runs in five innings and one hundred.
In the 2015 ODI World Cup, he was India’s top run-getter with 412 runs in eight matches and two hundreds.
Overall, Dhawan featured for India in 167 ODIs, scoring 6793 runs at an average of 44.11 and a strike rate of 91.35. He hit seven hundreds and five fifties.
