Shakib Al Hasan is in troubled waters with the star Bangladesh all-rounder among 147 individuals against whom charges have been filed in connection with an alleged murder that took place during the protests in Bangladesh earlier this month.
According to a report on ESPNCricinfo, the case that has been filed at Dhaka’s Adabor Police Station pertains to the death of a garment worker. Rafiqul Islam, father of the deceased Mohammed Rubel, filed the case on Thursday, naming the all-rounder among the accused.
According to The Daily Star, Rubel was among hundreds of students protesting against the Sheikh Hasina government in the Adabor area on 5 August when they were fired at. According to the complainant, some of the accused as per instruction directly or indirectly from some others opened fire at the protestors.
Besides being one of the finest all-rounders of the current generation and arguably Bangladesh’s greatest cricketer of all time, Shakib is also a former Member of Parliament with the Awami League, the party led by ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina that was in power for more than a decade until it was toppled by student-led protests.
Besides Shakib, ex-PM Sheikh Hasina and several lawmakers belonging to the Awami League have been named in the First Information Report (FIR) that has been registered in Dhaka.

Shakib, however, wasn’t in Bangladesh at the height of the protests, which led to Hasina fleeing her residence and flying to India, where she has been staying at a secure location ever since.
The southpaw had been leading the Bangla Tigers Mississauga in the Global T20 Canada League in Brampton. Before that, the senior cricketer was busy participating in the second season of Major League Cricket (MLC).
Shakib currently is part of the Bangladeshi team that is touring Pakistan for a two-Test series, first match of which is underway in Rawalpindi.
