Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson’s 86 went in vain as Delhi Capitals won by 20 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium to stay in the running for an IPL playoff berth on Tuesday. RR, meanwhile, suffered their second loss in a thrilling contest in the national capital. Samson’s game-changing dismissal came under controversial circumstances and has hogged the attention.
Chasing 222 runs for victory, Samson proved to be the lone warrior for RR who lost opener Yashasvi Jaiswal in the first over itself. Samson, named in the India squad for the T20 World Cup, raced off to 40 runs inside the powerplay to take the attack to Delhi.
However, the RR wicketkeeper-batter lacked support at the other end with batters not staying for long. Despite that, Samson motored on towards the target with 63 runs needed from five overs.
The controversy erupted at this moment in the game. Samson struck a Mukesh Kumar delivery towards long-off and it appeared he had done enough to clear the boundary ropes for a six. But, Shai Hope, stationed in the deep, judged the overhead catch. Except he had to tip-toe on the line with suggestions his feet had touched the rope.

Samson was later fined 30 percent of his match fee for the protests which are in breach of the IPL Code of Conduct. “Samson committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” said the BCCI in a release.
In the stands, though, Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal lost his calm and repeatedly said, ‘out hai, out hai.’
Samson eventually made his way back to the dugout after scoring 86 runs from 46 balls. Rajasthan lost three more wickets in the next two overs and Delhi restricted the opposition to 201/8 for their sixth win in 12 matches.
