Aryan Bangar, the son of former India cricketer Sanjay Bangar, recently underwent a hormonal replacement surgery and shared a video of the 10-month progress on Instagram. Aryan, who now identifies as Anaya after the gender change from a boy to a transwoman, however later deleted the video. According to a report in livemint.com, the video had a compilation of old photos of the 23-year-old along with World Cup-winning former India captain MS Dhoni and senior India batter Virat Kohli.
Anaya (Aryan back then) played for Islam Gymkhana, a local cricket club, and went onto play for Hinckley Cricket Club in Leicestershire. However, now, Anaya has given up on her dream of playing professional cricket.
On Sunday, Anaya shared a post on Instagram of herself embracing the change. “Losing strength but gaining happiness. Body changing, dysphoria easing… still a long way to go, but each step feels more like me,” she captioned the post. Anaya had also shared details of her hormonal transformation journey earlier this year.
“From a young age, cricket has always been a part of my life. Growing up, I watched my dad with awe as he represented and coached the country, and it wasn’t long before I started dreaming about following in his footsteps,” Anaya had written on her Instagram page in August.

I’ve spent my entire life honing my skills, hoping that one day, I would get the chance to represent my country, just like him. “I never thought I’d have to consider giving up the sport that has been my passion, my love, and my escape. But here I am, facing a painful reality. As a trans woman on hormone replacement therapy (HRT), my body has changed drastically. I’ve been losing the muscle mass, strength, muscle memory, and athletic abilities I once relied on. The game I’ve loved for so long is slipping away from me,” she had said.
Anaya reportedly resides in Manchester currently and plays for a county club despite giving up on the sport professionally. It is, however, not known which county club she plays for. In October this year, it was reported that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will ban transgender women from playing women’s domestic cricket at the elite level from 2025. Anaya was far from pleased with the development, sharing a post with on Instagram with a caption that said: “It sucks being a trans athlete.”
