India have not won an ICC tournament since the 2013 Champions Trophy and the drought has been riddled with heartbreak. There have been semi-final finished at the 2022 T20 World Cup, final of the 2023 World Test Championship and most recently at the ODI World Cup in India last year. The chase to end that poor record moves to the T20 World Cup next month in West Indies and USA.
Leading India's star cast will be Rohit Sharma. When asked about Rohit’s significance to the tournament, former India player Yuvraj Singh expressed his support for the Hitman to lead the side.
“(Rohit’s presence is going to be) very crucial. I think we need a really good captain, a sensible captain who takes decisions well under pressure. And he’s the one to take them,” T20 World Cup 2024 ambassador Yuvraj said in an interview with ICC.
“He was the captain when we lost in the (Cricket World Cup) 50-over final (in 2023). He has won five IPL trophies as a captain. I think we need somebody like him to captain India.”
Yuvraj and Rohit have had a long history in international and franchise cricket. Rohit stepped up to bat for India at the fall of a Yuvraj wicket in 2007. They shared the Indian dressing room when Rohit was coming up in his early years. And in a complete circle, Yuvraj’s final season came under Rohit’s captaincy at the Mumbai Indians. Following that IPL season, Yuvraj announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in June 2019.
Yuvraj recalled his early impression of Rohit, who joined the Indian team at 17 and showered praise on the now Indian captain. ‘Yuvi’ emphasised Rohit’s humility, camaraderie and leadership qualities both on and off the field.

More Shorts“Very poor English,” Yuvraj said jokingly. “Very funny guy. From the streets of Borivali (in Mumbai), we always tease him. But a great guy at heart.
“The more success he’s had, he has never changed as a person. That’s the beauty of Rohit Sharma. Fun-loving, always having fun with the guys, A great leader on the park and one of my closest friends from cricket.
“I really want to see Rohit Sharma with a World Cup trophy and a World Cup medal. He really deserves it.”
