What's next for Rohit Sharma at Mumbai Indians? Coach Mark Boucher answers

Rohit Sharma signed off from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season with a powerful 68 run knock from 38 balls against the Lucknow Super Giants . It earned the former Mumbai Indians captain a standing ovation from the home fans at the Wankhede Stadium. It was a surreal feeling for the thousands in attendance. Was it the last time they were applauding Rohit Sharma in Mumbai’s colours?

Even MI head coach Mark Boucher couldn’t confirm Rohit’s future. It had been a rollercoaster season for the five-time champions who saw Hardik Pandya join in the pre-season from Gujarat Titans, take over as captain only to finish bottom of the table .

“To be honest, there hasn’t been many conversations about Rohit’s future at all. I spoke to him last night or the night before, just to do a little review of the season,” Boucher said on Friday.

“I said, ‘what’s next for Rohit Sharma?’ He said to me, ‘the (T20) World Cup’. (And) that’s perfect. That’s all I need to know about what Rohit Sharma’s future is.” “For me, he’s a master of his own destiny. It’s a big auction next season. Who knows what’s going to happen? We’ll just have to take each day as it comes,” he added.

Rohit said he didn’t live up to the lofty standards he has set for himself. But he emphasised that it is important to not overthink it or it will affect the mindset even more.

“As a batter, I know I didn’t live up to the standard. But, after playing for all these years, I know that if I overthink, I won’t play well,” he said on JioCinema.

“All I try is to stay in a good mindset, in the right zone, keep practicing, and improve on all the flaws in my game. That’s all I kept doing."

“Our season didn’t go according to plan. We blame ourselves for this because we made too many mistakes during the season. We lost many games that we should have won, but that’s the nature of the IPL. You get a few chances and when those chances come, you must grab them,” he added while assessing the season.
