It’s been nearly a year now since India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant met with an accident while driving from New Delhi to his hometown of Roorkee. While Pant was lucky to have escaped the mangled remains of his Mercedes-Benz GLE AMG Coupe before it turned into a giant fireball, the injuries that he suffered have since ruled him out of competitive cricket. The Delhi Capitals captain has had to undergo multiple surgeries following by extensive rehabilitation since the accident, missing out on a number of events including the IPL, World Test Championship final, Asia Cup and the ICC World Cup. Pant, however, has been making steady progress of late and has began walking without support. And occasionally, he has even had the opportunity to reunite with some of his teammates both in the Indian team as well as at the Capitals. On Wednesday, the Delhi Capitals shared an image of Pant reuniting with India and DC opener Prithvi Shaw through their social media accounts that has since gone viral, further raising hopes of the wicketkeeper-batter making his much-awaited return sooner rather than later.
“Waiting for your comeback Pant,” read one reply to their post on X, formerly known as Twitter. “These two will win it for DC in 2024,” is what an Instagram user wrote in the comments section. Pant had been retained by the Capitals on Sunday, 26 November, the final day for IPL franchises to announce their list of retained and released players, though the franchise refrained from naming a captain. Australian opener David Warner, who led Sunrisers Hyderabad to the title in 2016, led the Capitals in his absence though the franchise, though the 2020 runners-up struggled for a majority of the season and eventually finished second-from-bottom. While he isn’t expected to feature in the tour of South Africa or in the five-Test series against England at home, Pant’s current progress makes fans hopeful of him returning to action in the IPL and also feature in the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the United States right after.
