Ravindra Jadeja announced his retirement from T20Is on Sunday after India won the T20 World Cup 2024 by beating South Africa in the final. Jadeja follows fellow veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in announcing retirement from the shortest format of international cricket.

“With a heart full of gratitude, I bid farewell to T20 internationals,” Jadeja wrote on Instagram while making the announcement. “Like a steadfast horse galloping with pride, I’ve always given my best for my country and will continue to do so in other formats. Winning the T20 World Cup was a dream come true, a pinnacle of my T20 International career. Thank you for the memories, the cheers, and the unwavering support.”

The Gujarat-born cricketer made his T20I debut for India on 10 February, 2009 against Sri Lanka in Colombo. He finished with figures of 0/29 from four overs while scoring just five runs in India’s three-wicket chase. The 35 year-old has played 74 T20Is, scoring 515 runs from 41 innings at an average of 21.45 and a strike-rate of 127.16. With the ball, he’s taken 54 wickets from 71 matches at an economy of 7.13.

The Saurashtra spinner, however, had a rather underwhelming T20 World Cup, having picked up just the one wicket against Afghanistan in a Super 8 match. Jadeja managed to score just 35 runs from five innings at the 2024 T20 World Cup.

On Saturday, India defeated South Africa in the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados by seven runs to clinch their first ICC title win since 2013. The Men in Blue had won the toss and opted to bat against the Proteas, and despite a shaky start where they lost three wickets including that of skipper Rohit Sharma in the powerplay, Virat Kohli (76) and Axar Patel (47) stitched 72 runs for the fourth wicket that eventually led India to 176/7.

Bowlers ruled the roost in South Africa’s chase despite gritty knocks from Henrich Klaasen (53), Quinton de Kock (39) and Tristan Stubbs. Hardik Pandya finished with figures of 3/20, whereas Arshdeep Singh (2/20) and Jasprit Bumrah (2/18) also impressed. Axar Patel had figures of 1/49 as the Proteas finished with a total of 169/8. For South Africa, this was yet another heartbreak in ICC tournaments as they fell short of glory.
