Former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has hailed his ex-teammate Ravindra Jadeja, terming the latter a “more gifted” cricketer than Ashwin himself. Ashwin also stressed on how the media doesn’t appreciate players like Jadeja enough. Both Ashwin and Jadeja have taken a combined tally of 587 wickets from 58 Tests. While Ashwin picked 317 wickets, Jadeja accounted for 270 wickets.

Ashwin retired from international cricket at the end of the Brisbane Test against Australia in December last year. Jadeja, who retired from T20Is after India’s victorious T20 World Cup campaign last year, continues to play Tests and ODIs.

‘We don’t give Jadeja enough credit’: R Ashwin

“Our media fails to appreciate when a player does well. Whenever we lose, everyone becomes a villain. He dismissed Joe Root (in the 1st IND vs ENG ODI). Jadeja goes always under the radar. He is a “Jackpot Jango”. He is +10 in the field, also bowls well and bats in pressure situations as well. We don’t give Jadeja enough credit,” Ashwin said on his YouTube show Ash Ki Baat.

Jadeja picked three wickets in the recent first ODI between India and England and that took his overall wicks tally to 600 in international cricket. Ashwin (765 wickets) is the second-highest wicket-taker in terms of Indians in international cricket, behind Anil Kumble (953 wickets).

When asked about Jadeja (Fifth in the list) getting closer to Ashwin, the Tamil Nadu all-rounder said: “Jadeja is way more gifted than I ever can. He is a born athlete. His major advantages lie in his physical fitness. He is naturally fit. Even at this age, he can cover the entire area from long on to deep square leg while standing at mid-wicket. I wouldn’t be surprised. And I will be more than happy for him," he said.

Jadeja has so far taken 323 wickets from 80 Tests and 223 wickets from 198 ODIs. The Saurashtra all-rounder ended his T20I career with 54 wickets from 74 matches.
