Joe Root and Harry Brook had a record-breaking day in Multan Thursday as England declared after posting a daunting 823/7 on Day 4 of the first Test against Pakistan. Root, who had become England’s highest run-getter on Day 3 of the Multan Test, finished his innings on 262 and stitched a record partnership of 454 runs with Harry Brook for the fourth wicket. Brook scored a brilliant 317 and scripted multiple individual records as well.

1 - Root-Brook’s 454-run partnership is the highest partnership in Test cricket history for the fourth or lower wicket, surpassing the previous highest of 449 between Adam Voges and Shaun Marsh against West Indies in 2015.

1 - England have become the first team to score 800+ runs against Pakistan in an innings of a Test match. The previous highest was 790/3 by the West Indies against Pakistan in 1958.

1 - Root and Brook are the only batting pair from England to have multiple 300-plus runs partnerships in Test cricket. They also put up 302 runs together against New Zealand in Wellington in 2023.

454 - The partnership between Root and Brook is also the highest partnership against Pakistan in a Test for any wicket. The previous highest was the 446-run partnership between Conrad Hunte and Gary Sobers for the second wicket in 1958. It’s also the highest partnership in Tests for England. The previous best was a 411-run stand between Peter May and Colin Cowdrey against West Indies in 1957.
