The 34,000-capacity stadium had been built at the Eisenhower Park in Long Island, New York specifically for the ninth edition of ICC’s flagship T20 event. It hosted eight matches over the past couple of weeks — including the marquee India vs Pakistan clash on 9 June.

The venue had earned quite the reputation for being a nightmare for batters with its uneven bounce and the sluggish outfields. The first two matches at this venue had witnessed teams batting first getting shot out for less than 100 — South Africa bowling Sri Lanka out for 77 and India restricting Ireland to 96. Both South Africa and India chased down the targets with plenty of wickets and overs to spare.

Its tendency to favour the bowlers, however, also led to the spicy New York pitch producing some of the most thrilling finishes of the tournament so far. Netherlands nearly pulled off a third consecutive victory over South Africa after posting just 103, reducing the Proteas to 12/4 at one stage before David Miller came to their rescue. Pakistan, meanwhile, had been cruising at 73/2 after bowling India out for 119 before the Jasprit Bumrah-led Indian attack produced a comeback for the ages.

South Africa, similarly, managed to hold on to their nerve after posting 113 against Bangladesh to register a thrilling four-run win and maintain their unbeaten run in the tournament.

On Wednesday, the United States had India in a spot of bother after left-arm pacer Saurabh Netravalkar removed both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in successive overs in the powerplay, while Ali Khan castled Rishabh Pant to leave India tottering at 39/3 in their chase of 111. Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube later came to their rescue with an unbroken 72-run stand to help the Men in Blue qualify for the Super 8s with a seven-wicket victory and pull off the highest successful chase at this venue.

Dallas’ Grand Prairie Stadium, which hosted the tournament opener between USA and Canada on 1 June, too is done with its share of matches. The former baseball venue hosted four matches including the US-Canada match, the last of which was Bangladesh’s thrilling two-wicket victory over Sri Lanka. It was at this venue where USA had stunned 2009 T20 world champions Pakistan after taking the match into a Super Over.

The US will host three more matches — all of them at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida. The first match at this venue between Nepal and Sri Lanka on Wednesday, 12 June was washed out without a ball bowled. Florida will later host three Group A fixtures, including India vs Canada, that will decide which team joins the Men in Blue in the Super 8s.
