MS Dhoni drops big hint about participation in IPL 2024, provides clarity on injury

Former India captain MS Dhoni provided a significant update on his knee injury and his participation in the 2024 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Chennai Super Kings. Dhoni, who had led CSK to the title in IPL 2023, was plagued with a knee injury that had limited his batting contributions. After the season, he underwent knee surgery and disclosed that he was experiencing no complications and was progressing towards complete recovery. Dhoni, 42, was speaking at an event in Bengaluru. The legendary player said medical professionals had assured him that he would feel significantly better by November. The iconic wicketkeeper-batter also said that his knee had successfully withstood the surgery, and that he was undergoing a rehabilitation process.

Host at the event addressed a question to Dhoni by saying, “As you have retired…”. On hearing this, the individual sitting beside Dhoni interrupted and clarified that he’s only retired from international cricket and not the IPL. A smiling Dhoni agreed and said “yes” as fans cheered. Dhoni clarified on his injury status: “Knee has survived the operation, going through the rehab patch, the doctor told me you would feel much better by November. But no problem in day-to-day routine,” said Dhoni. Dhoni also added that he never wanted to be recognised as just an accomplished cricketer. Instead, he highlighted the importance of leaving a legacy as a decent human being. After leading the Chennai Super Kings to the title, Dhoni had thanked the supporters for all the love and pledged that he would leave no stone unturned in trying to make a comeback. “Circumstantially, it’s the best time to announce retirement. The easy thing for me is to say is thank you and retire. But the amount of love I have received from CSK fans, it would be a gift for them to (see me) play one more season,” Dhoni had said after CSK beat Gujarat Titans . The IPL player auction for the 2024 season is reportedly scheduled for 19 December in Dubai. This will be the first time that the auction will take place outside India. The 10 IPL teams need to submit their lists of retained and released players by 15 November. Following this deadline, the auction pool will be confirmed by early December.
