Despite Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ending up on the losing side against Delhi Capitals (DC) in their IPL 2024 match on Sunday, MS Dhoni made it a night to remember for CSK fans in Vizag. Dhoni rolled the clock back in time as he walked out to bat for the first time this season. CSK were in trouble at 120/6 in the 17th over when Dhoni walked out to bat, and just as the former skipper walked out, there was a huge roar among the Chennai supporters.
Facing Mukesh Kumar, Dhoni hoicked through backward square leg to collect a boundary straight away. He collected another boundary later in the same over, before using his front foot well to slam over extra cover for a six off Khaleel Ahmed’s bowling in the 18th over. Dhoni looked in no mood to relax as he would then punish Anrich Nortje for boundaries in the final over. CSK needed over 40 runs from the final over but for Dhoni, it was all about enjoying the moment as Dhoni hit two sixes and as many fours to punish the South African pacer.
Watch a few shots of Dhoni’s knock here:
Having opted to bat first, DC posted 191/5 on the board after fifties from skipper Rishabh Pant and David Warner, apart from a knock of 43 from Prithvi Shaw. CSK, however, lost Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rachin Ravindra early in the chase and that hurt their chances of winning the game, eventually being restricted to 171/6.
