Morne Morkel has reportedly been appointed the Indian cricket team’s bowling coach on Wednesday. The former South African pacer’s contract will start on September 1. It was reported before the Sri Lanka series that Morkel will be India’s bowling coach and the the news has now been confirmed by the BCCI Secretary Jay Shah.
Morkel had earlier worked under now India head coach Gautam Gambhir at the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). While Gambhir was the team mentor at LSG, Morkel was the bowling coach.
Morkel and Gambhir also played together as players for three seasons at the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Morkel’s first assignment as the Indian cricket team’s bowling coach will be the two-match Test series against Bangladesh at home which starts on 19 September.
Overall, Morkel played 247 international matches for South Africa and picked up 544 wickets in a career spanning from 2006 to 2018. He is well known for his partnership with Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander as the trio of pacers helped the Proteas win a lot of crucial matches.
As per media reports, Morkel was picked on recommendation of Gambhir.
“The Cricket Advisory Committee’s (CAC) mandate was to interview the candidates for the head coach. When it came to choice of support staff, it was imperative that Gambhir’s choice prevailed. He has worked with Morne and thinks of him highly as a bowling coach,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

More Shorts“Also with the big series against Australia coming up Down Under from last week of November, there isn’t a better choice than the South African, who has himself enjoyed fair bit of success over there. Also there will be the five-Test tour of England next year with a potential sixth match if India reach WTC final.”
