Mumbai Indians take on Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium in an IPL 2024 encounter on Friday. With just three wins from 10 matches, Mumbai are ninth in the 10-team league table with just six points. Now, you must be thinking they are surely out of the IPL 2024 playoffs race. If not, a defeat against KKR will knock them out.
The truth is MI are still alive in the IPL 2024 playoffs race despite winning just three out of 10 matches and will still be in contention if KKR beat them.
Here’s how:
With four matches still left, Mumbai can reach 14 points if they win all remaining games. In such a scenario, they can jump to the third spot if Rajasthan Royals and KKR maintain their lead at the top, win most of their matches, and finish as the top two teams with a healthy number of points. Also, if Lucknow Super Giants and Sunrisers Hyderabad lose three out of their four remaining matches then they will be tied on 14 points with MI. There’s also a possibility of the remaining six teams to finish on 12 points each.
What happens if MI lose to KKR?
If Mumbai lose to KKR on Friday but win their remaining three matches and the other teams also follow the same pattern as discussed earlier then we will have seven teams tied on 12 points each. This means MI will stay alive in the race for playoffs even if they lose to Kolkata at the Wankhede.
RCB are also alive in playoffs race
The same logic applies on RCB as well who also have six points from 10 matches and have four games left. If the pattern we discussed earlier remains the same then RCB can be in the top four with 14 points. They can also be in the fight with 12 points.
