Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana enjoyed quite the eventful day in office on Sunday, pulling off a stunning one-handed catch to dismiss David Warner during Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) away match against Delhi Capitals (DC) in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) on Sunday.

Warner had brought up his first half-century of the 17th IPL season after narrowly missing out on the milestone in Delhi’s previous match, against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur, and had stitched a solid opening partnership with Prithvi Shaw worth 93.
Chennai were desperately looking for a wicket at that stage, and it took a miraculous effort on the part of Pathirana in the 10th over of the innings for the defending champions to end the opening partnership.

Warner had picked a slower delivery from left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman and attempted to reverse-scoop it towards the third man fence. Despite Pathirana being stationed inside the circle in that direction, it was by no means an easy catch for the Sri Lankan, who had to time his jump to perfection in order to grab the ball. What made it even more challenging for him was the fact that he caught the ball with his non-dominant hand.

More ShortsThat wasn’t all from Pathirana as far as his heroics at Vizag’s ACA-VDCA Stadium was concerned, with the left-arm pacer bowling two fiery yorkers to castle Mitchell Marsh and Tristan Stubbs in a space of three deliveries in his second over of the evening.

Pathirana would later dismiss Delhi skipper Rishabh Pant, but not before getting smashed for a six and two fours by the wicketkeeper-batter who departed for a 32-ball 51, collecting his first half-century of the season.
Pant’s half-century helped Delhi post a competitive 191/5 on the board against the defending champions after opting to bat, boosting their hopes of collecting their first win of the season after starting the season with back-to-back defeats.
