Members of the Indian cricket team were seen wearing black armbands in memory of the the late Dr Manmohan Singh on Day 2 of the 'Boxing Day Test' against Australia in Melbourne as tributes poured in from the sporting fraternity following the demise of the former Prime Minister of India. Dr Singh, who had served as Union Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996 and as Prime Minister between 2004 and 2014, passed away at the age of 92 on Thursday at AIIMS in New Delhi.
Dr Singh, who was born in Gah, Pakistan in 1932, is widely credited with lifting India out of a crisis with the liberalisation of the economy shortly after his appointment as Finance Minister in the PV Narasimha Rao-led cabinet in 1991. His biggest achievement as PM was the Indo-US Nuclear Deal that was signed in 2008 besides helping India achieve its highest-ever GDP growth rate of 10.08 per cent and implementing social welfare measures such as the Mahatma Gandhi NREGA Act.
