Delhi Capitals Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly speaks to Sports18 on the franchise’s purchases
“First time. But I was involved last year. Had just finished presidentship. Had set the team up. It’s a small auction, but a great tournament. This is only going to grow. You’ve heard good things about here. These small auctions are all about that. Few slots to fill. I feel so good for them. I saw another Indian player go for a lot of money. It’s only going to get better. Hopefully we play well this time. Ashwini Kumari is someone they kept an eye on. She hits the ball a long way and bowls. We needed a back-up keeper in Sneha. And we good Sutherland. Too early to say. Let the tournament start. (On Meg Lanning) She’s a big player in women’s cricket and captain, winning six World Cups. She’s huge for us and will play for us. Her commitment last year was outstanding. Her training is brilliant. She’s just 32, so she will be in a phase of her career where she will be available.”

“DC were pretty much done with the auction after spending Rs 2 crore on Sutherland. The plans of both Mumbai Indians and Capitals were pretty clear. They were focusing on strengthening their teams. Overall, it’s a great pick for Delhi Capitals. They are trusting their younger Indian spinners because I immediately feel that Jess Jonassen could make way for Annabel Sutherland.”
— JioCinema expert Abhinav Mukund on Delhi Capitals spending Rs 2 crore on all-rounder Annabel Sutherland

“I am wondering where they will slot Vrinda Dinesh in. Yes, it’s nice to get a youngster in but they already have Shweta Sehrawat and Parshavi Chopra. When you get someone like Vrinda Dinesh, you want some freshness in the squad and you can get her to open the innings with Alyssa Healy but that also puts pressure on Kiran Navgire. So, I am concerned about Shweta Sehrawat and Vrinda Dinesh – both U-23 players now. It’s a good buy but Rs 1.3 crore is big money.”
— JioCinema expert Anjum Chopra on Vrinda Dinesh going to UP Warriorz for Rs 1.3 crore
