STUMPS ON DAY 2 — That’s it as far as the second day of the first Test at Centurion is concerned, with play getting called off shortly after the umpires signal the players to head back to their respective dressing rooms.

It was a day that belonged to senior batter Dean Elgar, who remained unconquered on 140 off 211 deliveries collecting 23 boundaries along the way, as a result of which the hosts find themselves 11 runs ahead of their opponents with five wickets still in hand. With Elgar still going strong, the Proteas can set their sights on collecting a first innings lead in the range of 100, which not only could have a major impact in this match but might ultimately decide the fate of the series.

The pair have added 81 for the fourth wicket so far and will look to steer the Proteas not only past the Indian total, but get a sizeable lead on the board at the end of the day. Bumrah had briefly put the hosts under pressure by dismissing de Zorzi and Keegan Petersen in successive overs, but that appears a mere blip now with South Africa collecting 145 runs in the session that is two-and-a-half hours long to make up for lost time on Day 1.

The Indians suddenly rediscover their voices after Bumrah’s dismissal of de Zorzi. Keegan Petersen, who was among the Proteas’ top performers in their 2-1 series victory two years ago, joins Elgar at the centre. Elgar collects three at the start of the 30th over, coming back for a couple of more runs thanks to a direct hit that results in overthrows. Siraj oversteps in the following delivery. Petersen then opens his account with a brace in the third delivery, flicking the ball behind square. Meanwhile, replays show Virat Kohli changing the position of the bails at the non-striker’s end ahead of Bumrah’s ninth over, and though the pace spearhead got hit for a boundary, he did deliver the breakthrough. Stuart Broad did something similar during the Ashes earlier this summer, and this trend might just get more popular in the near future.
