Virat Kohli was forced to miss the Nagpur ODI between India and England due to a swollen knee, marking a rare occurrence in the star cricketer’s career. The last time Kohli missed a match due to fitness or injury issues was in 2022, 1130 days ago.
Kohli’s absence gave India a chance to play Shreyas Iyer, who re-established his ODI credentials with a fiery match-winning fifty as India clinched the first ODI at the VCA Stadium by four wickets. The Indian cricket team now faces a tough question of whom to drop when Kohli returns as Iyer has already made a solid case for his inclusion while Yashasvi Jaiswal was given an ODI debut in Nagpur with an eye on adding an extra left-right combination to the Indian batting line-up.
Kohli ‘will play the Cuttack ODI in all likelihood’
Nonetheless, India would want Kohli to be back as soon as possible and get some runs before the Champions Trophy 2025 starts on 19 February, Kohli is one of India’s premier batters but has struggled for runs recently. He managed just 190 runs in five Tests in Australia and got out on 6 in his only Ranji Trophy innings earlier this month.
An Indian cricket team insider has leaked to the Times of India that Kohli’s “knee problem” doesn’t look serious and he should be back for the second India-England ODI in Cuttack on 9 February (Sunday).
“His right knee was fine during practice, but once we got back to the hotel, it swelled up,” a Team India insider told TOI. “It doesn’t seem that bad though. He will play the Cuttack ODI in all likelihood.”
The report also added that the former India captain didn’t go for any scans, which indicates the problem probably isn’t that serious.
When was the last time Kohli missed a game due to injury?
It was a Test match against South Africa in 2022 that Kohli last missed due to fitness or injury issues. The 36-year-old sat out of that match due to an upper back spasm issue.
Before 2022, Kohli missed a game in 2021 due to a stiff back, sitting out of a warm-up match against a Select County XI side before the Test series in England.
