Shreyas Iyer will be back as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, the franchise confirmed on Thursday. Nitish Rana, who captained KKR in IPL 2023, will be the vice-captain. Iyer missed the entire season of IPL 2023 due to a back injury after which Rana filled in as the captain. KKR finished seventh in the IPL 2023 points table with six wins from 16 matches. The announcement was made by KKR on social media platforms and in their statement, KKR CEO Venky Mysore said: “It was indeed unfortunate that Shreyas missed IPL 2023 due to injury. We are delighted that he’s back and at the helm as Captain. The way he has worked hard to recover from his injury and the form he has displayed is a testament to his character.”

“I believe the last season presented us with several challenges, including my absence due to injury. Nitish did a great job not only filling in for me but also with his commendable leadership. I am delighted that KKR has named him Vice Captain. No doubt it will strengthen the leadership group,” Iyer was quoted as saying in a KKR statement. Shreyas returned to international cricket in September in the Asia Cup. He also batted at No 4 for India in the World Cup and scored 530 runs from 11 innings with two hundreds and three fifties at an average of 66.25.
