International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman Jay Shah recently met International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach ahead of the Extraordinary IOC session in Lausanne, Switzerland from 30 January. “Momentum continues to build around cricket’s inclusion as an @Olympics sport at the @LA2028 Games and beyond, with @JayShah meeting International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach in Lausanne, Switzerland this week,” the ICC posted on X on Tuesday.
Shah, who was elected as ICC chairman last year and took over the role on 1 December 2024, has been actively pushing for cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics. He was in Brisbane last month during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and met 2032 Brisbane Olympic Organising Committee head Cindy Hook and Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley, trying to convince them to include cricket in the 2032 Olympics.

T20 cricket for the 2028 LA Olympics was already confirmed at the 141st Olympic session in 2023 which took place in Mumbai. Cricket will be returning to the Olympics after a gap of 128 years.
Apart from cricket, baseball-softball, flag football, lacrosse (sixes) and squash were also adopted by LA28.

“As an IOC member, a proud Indian, and an ardent cricket fan, I am delighted that IOC members have voted to include Cricket as an Olympic Sport in the LA Summer Olympics 2028,” Ambani said.
“The inclusion of cricket in the Olympics will create deeper engagement for the Olympic Movement in newer geographies. And at the same time, provides a boost to cricket’s growing international popularity.”
During the upcoming IOC session, Members will attend presentations by the candidates for the IOC presidency. This in-camera session will provide an opportunity for Members to learn about the programs and visions of the seven candidates .
