Jasprit Bumrah has been rested from India’s fourth Test against England in Ranchi. The decision to give Bumrah a break has been made by the BCCI, selectors and medical staff keeping his workload in mind.

The seamer bowled 80.5 overs in the three Test matches against England. There’s plenty of crucial cricket still left to be played in the year with Indian Premier League (IPL) season coming up followed closely by the T20 World Cup beginning 1 June.

“The decision was taken keeping in mind the duration of the series and amount of cricket he has played in recent times,” said a BCCI statement.

There was speculation Bumrah would skip the third Test in Rajkot but ended up playing afterall. But with India leading the series 2-1, Bumrah’s place in the lineup could go to one of Mukesh Kumar, who has rejoined the squad, or Akash Deep.

Bumrah’s shoes will be tough to fill for either seamer considering he’s the leading wicket-taker in the series with 17 scalps at 13.64. He emerged as the Player of the Match in Visakhapatnam, where he took 9 for 91 across both innings.

The right-arm seamer has been playing near non-stop cricket since his return from a lower-back stress fracture. After missing 11 months of action with injury, Bumrah got back into the thick of things with a T20I series against Ireland.

Since then, Bumrah’s focus has been on the longest format - skipping the white ball series against Australia and South Africa.

In South Africa, he bowled 26.4 overs for 4 wickets in the first Test. In the second Test match, he bowled 21.5 overs and took 8 wickets. His 12 wickets earned the seamer the Player of Series honour.

And on to England Test series now where he’s bowled 80.5 overs spread across Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Rajkot. His tally at the three venues has been six, nine and two wickets respectively.
