Jasprit Bumrah was among the top wicket-takers in the 2023 ICC World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup and had topped the list in the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Reuters

The worst fears of the Indian cricket team and its fans came true on Tuesday when the BCCI confirmed senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah would be missing the upcoming Champions Trophy . The star pacer’s participation in the ninth edition of the ‘Mini World Cup’ was always in doubt ever since he suffered a back spasm during the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney .

Bumrah had checked into the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru recently, and the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee had waited patiently for some positive news from the rehabilitation and training centre before making the final announcement on Tuesday.

The ICC had set 11 February as the deadline for teams to make final changes to their Champions Trophy squad. The BCCI had earlier included Bumrah in the provisional squad announced on 18 January – six days after the ICC deadline – hoping he would be declared fit in time before the squads were locked eight days before the start of the tournament.

Young pacer Harshit Rana, who has been impressive across formats for the Indian team since making his international debut in the Perth Test against Australia, has been included as Bumrah’s replacement in the squad.

Additionally, mystery leg-spinner Varun Chakravarthy has been added to the 15-man squad at the expense of opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has been demoted to the non-traveling reserves along with Mohammed Siraj and Shivam Dube.

PCB bans players from WCL over India-Pakistan match controversy

Bumrah had been at the peak of his powers for more than a year, including in India’s runner-up finish in the 2023 ODI World Cup and victory in the T20 World Cup last June besides finishing the leading wicket-taker in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Some users even questioned the logic behind picking Rana over a tried-and-tested pacer in Siraj while others blamed the Indian team management for over-working Bumrah to the point of a serious injury.

Here are select reactions to BCCI’s announcement on Tuesday:

Over for us

— Mumbai Indians FC (@MIPaltanFamily) February 11, 2025

Bumrah delivered an ultra peak starting with Asia Cup till BGT & arguably as good as 15 months any bowler might have had in the history of the sport but the moment he gets ruled out for something as irrelevant as CT, people are out abusing him.

It's tough being Bumrah.

— Siddhant (@SiddViz) February 11, 2025

Gonna miss Bumrah in CT. When the time is tough, Bumrah does something brilliant and then rest of the bowling rallies around him, gathers confidence. He is the playmaker that cricket traditionally doesn't accommodate in its vocabulary. But more than that my greed is for artistry.

— Bishontherockz (@BishOnTheRockx) February 11, 2025

Still not over how ridiculous Bumrah's usage in the BGT was. The series was always lost, and even more lost given the form of the senior batters.

Threw away his fitness for nothing when every single person walking this earth knew that he was being overworked. Feel for him.

Proper failure of

- Ajit Agarkar led selection committee
- Coach Gautam Gambhir

These two are responsible for putting Bumrah's career in danger for :

- Not managing Bumrah's workload with one man bowling attack for bgt
- Putting him extra miles even when his body was…

— Sandeep Rana (@sandeep__journo) February 11, 2025

What ?? Why is Harshit Rana so special for Gautam Gambhir ?? Why not Siraj ?? Selectors could have taken Shardul Thakur also who can bat also , this is really too much. I’m sure Bumrah will be playing IPL that sums of the whole story .

Team India play all of their matches in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and begin their campaign against Bangladesh on 20 February. That will be followed by a highly-anticipated showdown against Pakistan three days later followed by their final group match against New Zealand on 2 March.
