Ishan Kishan made a disappointing return to competitive cricket on Sunday as he was dismissed for a four-ball duck during Mumbai Indians’ opening game of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.
Kishan was caught-behind for a four-ball duck off all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai’s bowling as MI were dealt a blow in the very first over of their chase of the 169-run target set by GT.

MI keeper-batter Kishan made his first major appearance since the T20I series against Australia in November right after the ICC World Cup. He had reportedly taken a mental health break after the Australia T20Is, skipping the tour of South Africa, and would not feature in the Test series against England either despite reportedly being offered a place in the squad for the remaining three Tests after being overlooked for the first two.
Kishan, along with senior batter Shreyas Iyer, would also be left out of BCCI’s central contracts list for refusing to pay heed to the board as well as the team management’s advice of playing in the Ranji Trophy in order to prove his fitness after a prolonged period away from the game.
Omarzai would later make it two wickets in as many overs, dismissing debutant Naman Dhir (20 off 10 balls) in his next over though he was also smacked for three fours and a six before trapping the Punjab batter LBW.

Mumbai, however, managed to recover from the twin blow soon enough, with former skipper Rohit Sharma also shifting gears and moving to 24 off 16 as the five-time champions reached 52/2 at the end of the powerplay. That would later improve to 88/2 at the halfway stage, with Rohit and Impact Sub Dewald Brevis completing the fifty partnership for the third wicket in 39 balls.
Gujarat had earlier been restricted to 168/6 after being invited to bat by Hardik Pandya, making his debut as Mumbai Indians skipper against his old franchise. Jasprit Bumrah (3/14) and debutant Gerald Coetzee (2/27) led the way for the Mumbai bowlers, sharing five of the six wickets between them.
