Irani Cup 2024: Rest of India squad announced; Sarfaraz Khan expected to play for Mumbai

The Irani Cup 2024-25 will see the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 champion, Mumbai, take on the Rest of India (RoI) team at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on 1-5 October. The Irani Cup 2024-25 match was scheduled to take place in Mumbai but incessant rain in the financial capital of India has forced BCCI to move the match to Lucknow.

The Ranji Trophy champions, Mumbai, will be captained by Ajinkya Rahane while Ruturaj Gaikwad will captain the RoI team.

Ishan Kishan has found a place in the Rest of India squad, boosting his chances for an India return.

Three players who are currently part of the Indian Test team can also take part in the Irani Cup as the news agency PTI has reported that middle-order batter Sarfaraz Khan, wicket-keeper Dhruv Jurel, and pacer Yash Dayal are set to be released.

BCCI, while announcing the Rest of India team, also said: “Dhruv Jurel and Yash Dayal have been selected in the Rest of India squad and their participation is subject to them not being involved in the second Test match against Bangladesh in Kanpur.”

“Sarfaraz Khan who has been retained in the Team India squad for the 2nd Test, will be released to represent the Mumbai team subject to him not being involved in the second Test match against Bangladesh in Kanpur,” added the BCCI statement.
