Having led India to a 4-1 triumph against England in the Test series, skipper Rohit Sharma will now have to shift his focus to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. Rohit will be representing Mumbai Indians but he will not be seen handling the leadership duties of the franchise this time. Ending Rohit’s decade-long stint as the skipper of the side, the Mumbai Indians team management decided to bring back Hardik Pandya to the squad as the captain. Rohit has not spoken yet on this matter and former Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings cricketer Ambati Rayudu recently shared his stance on this development.

Rayudu felt that Rohit should have carried on as the captain of Mumbai Indians this year.

“This year, Rohit should have continued captaining and Hardik, maybe after a year, could have been given that responsibility. Rohit is still captaining India in T20Is. I personally feel that MI rushed into this decision but probably they know best. So, it will be difficult. Gujarat Titans had a different set-up. Captaining MI is not easy because there are so many star players in the team. There is too much pressure and not everyone can handle it," Rayudu said in an interview with News24.

Rayudu also went on to express his desire to see Rohit donning the iconic Chennai Super Kings jersey. “Rohit can play for another 5-6 years. I want to see Rohit in CSK going forward. If he has to captain, he can do it anywhere in the world. But it’s up to him. He has played so many years for MI and won them titles. So if he goes there, why not," Rayudu explained.

As the leader of Mumbai Indians, Rohit had guided the franchise to five IPL titles. Pandya, on the other hand, led Gujarat Titans to IPL triumph in their debut campaign in 2022. Pandya also led the Gujarat Titans in the last season of the IPL but he could not win a trophy, finishing as the runners-up in 2023. Gujarat Titans lost in the IPL 2023 final to Chennai Super Kings, led by legendary India skipper MS Dhoni.
