The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council had recently announced the return of the Right To Match (RTM) card while announcing the player retention and auction guidelines for the next three seasons from 2025 to 2027.

According to the latest guidelines, a franchise can retain up to six players from their existing squad — whether by including them in their retention list or by using the RTM card during the auction.

According to a report on Cricbuzz, however, several franchises have expressed concerns over the additional advantages given to the highest bidder in the auction during the implementation of the RTM facility.

The BCCI’s guidelines state that the highest bidder for a player at the auction can make one last bid — which could be of any value — before RTM is exercised by the team that had released the player before the retention deadline.

The team holding the RTM privilege will then have to match the final bid before taking the player back into their fold.

“The highest bidder will be given one final opportunity to raise their bid for a player before the team holding the RTM card can exercise their right,” reads BCCI’s updated rule on ‘Right To Match’.

“For example, if Team 1 holds the RTM for Player X and Team 2 has placed the highest bid of Rs. 6 Cr, then Team 1 will be first asked if they will exercise RTM, if Team 1 agrees, then Team 2 will have the chance to increase their bid. If Team 2 raises their bid to Rs. 9 Cr, then Team 1 can use the RTM and acquire Player X for Rs. 9 Cr. If Team 2 chooses not to raise the bid and keeps it at Rs. 6 Cr, Team 1 can use the RTM and get Player X for Rs. 6 Cr,” the board further elaborated.

The BCCI did not set a limit on the number of players who can be retained by either method, leaving it to the wisdom of the management of the 10 franchises.

Therefore, a franchise can use the RTM card six times provided they released their entire squad into the auction pool ahead of the retention deadline, which has been set for 31 October by the board.
