The Indian Premier League (IPL) retention rules are expected to come out soon as the Governing Council (GC) will be meeting today (28 September, Saturday) in Bengaluru. The IPL retention rules ahead of the 2025 mega auction are expected to come out on Saturday or Sunday, reported Cricbuzz. A decision on when to release the retention rule will be taken at the IPL Governing Council meeting.

As per the report, the IPL GC will be meeting at the Four Seasons Hotel in Bengaluru at 11.30 AM IST. The meeting was arranged only on Friday evening and there’s a possibility that after all the matters including retention rules are discussed on Saturday, they can be presented in front of the BCCI general body on Sunday before being announced to the public.

IPL GC to decide auction date and venue

The IPL GC will be discussing various matters like date of the 2025 medga auction and venues. It has been reported earlier that the IPL auction 2025 can be hosted outside India at the end of November. The last time the IPL 2024 auction took place in Dubai and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia is a favourite this time.

The Right-to-match (RTM) card option will also be discussed. There are reports that BCCI could do away with such a rule for the mega auction as a lot of franchises have expressed their feelings against such a rule. The franchises during their meeting with BCCI in July had also asked to increase the number of player retentions per team and it is expected that the GC could settle for 5-6 retentions.

IPL Auction: 5 player retentions and no RTM card option?

5-6 retentions per team will work in favour of teams like Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians who have invested heavily in young players. They will also be able to retain the majority if their core players. Like Mumbai will be able to retain all of Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah, while CSK can retain Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad, MS Dhoni, Rachin Ravindra among others.
