IPL Purple Cap Winners: All bowlers to have won Purple Cap from 2008 to 2023

The upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to commence on March 22 with a big-ticket clash between reigning champions Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore. The inaugural game will be hosted in Chennai. While the main focus will be on the coveted title, there will be some individual awards up for grabs. One of them is the Purple Cap, which recognises the leading wicket-taker of each edition.

Indian pacer Mohammad Shami clinched this prized accolade last season after picking up 28 wickets in 17 appearances for Gujarat Titans. Dwayne Bravo and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are the only bowlers who have secured the Purple Cap two times in the history of the competition. Let’s take a look at the Purple Cap winners of all IPL editions:

Sohail Tanvir (2008)

The Shane Warne-led Rajasthan Royals became the champions of the inaugural IPL and Sohail Tanvir deserves much credit for the franchise’s dominant run throughout the campaign. The Pakistani speedster fetched 22 wickets that season.

RP Singh (2009)

RP Singh played a key role in the Deccan Chargers’ triumphant run in the 2009 IPL. The ex-Indian pacer claimed 23 wickets in the tournament in 2009.

Pragyan Ojha (2010)

Pragyan Ojha, who represented Deccan Chargers in the 2010 edition, won the Purple Cap after picking up 21 wickets in 16 matches.

Lasith Malinga (2011)

In 2011 when Mumbai Indians were yet to claim their first IPL title, one of their marquee players, Lasith Malinga, stole the show with his fiery pace and toe-crushing yorkers. The Sri Lankan legend was the top-performing bowler of the season. He bagged 28 wickets in 16 games and claimed the elusive Purple Cap in 2011.

Morne Morkel (2012)

Many legendary cricketers have played for Delhi Capitals over the years. One of them was South African pacer Morne Morkel, who demonstrated his supreme bowling skills in the 2012 season. He scalped 25 wickets in 16 matches including a four-fer against KKR.

Dwayne Bravo (2013)

The current bowling coach of Chennai Super Kings, Dwayne Bravo, has lifted the IPL trophy four times with the franchise during his playing days. They fell marginally short of securing the title in 2013 but Bravo showcased his A-game with the ball. The Caribbean legend earned 32 wickets during the campaign to take home the Purple Cap.

Mohit Sharma (2014)

Mohit Sharma proved his quality in the 2014 IPL, representing Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Sharma played 16 matches in the tournament and got 23 wickets under his belt to win the Purple Cap back then.

Dwayne Bravo (2015)

Dwany Bravo claimed his second Purple Cap in the 2015 season when CSK finished as the runners-up after losing to Mumbai Indians. The all-rounder grabbed a total of 26 wickets.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2016)

Sunrisers Hyderabad wrapped up the 2016 season on a triumphant note, thanks to a top-notch performance by pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The Indian star made 17 appearances during the campaign and took 23 wickets to keep the Purple Cap in his possession.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2017)

Sunrisers Hyderabad failed to retain the title in 2017 but Bhuvneshwar Kumar was able to secure the Purple Cap for the second consecutive time. This time, Kumar finished the competition with 26 wickets under his belt.

Andrew Tye (2018)

Representing Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Andrew Tye grabbed the eyeballs with his variations in the 2018 edition of the IPL. Recognised as a death-over specialist, Tye picked 24 wickets in 14 games in that season and deservingly won the Purple Cap.

Imran Tahir (2019)

CSK suffered a narrow one-wicket defeat at the hands of arch-rivals Mumbai Indians in the 2019 IPL final. Imran Tahir, who was part of the Chennai-based franchise, finished at the top of the leading wicket-takers list. The Proteas spinner recorded a total of 26 wickets that season.

Kagiso Rabada (2020)

Kagiso Rabada hit the headlines with his formidable pace during the 2020 IPL. As a part of the Delhi-based franchise, Rabada fetched 30 wickets in 17 matches.

Harshal Patel (2021)

Harshal Patel equalled Dwayne Bravo’s record of picking the most number of wickets in a single IPL season in 2021. Representing RCB, the Indian quick required 15 matches to claim 32 wickets.

Yuzvendra Chahal (2022)

Yuzvendra Chahal claimed 27 wickets in the 2022 edition of the IPL. Rajasthan Royals concluded the campaign as the runners-up after losing the final to the Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans.

Mohammad Shami (2023)

Mohammad Shami spearheaded the Gujarat Titans pace attack in IPL 2023 when the franchise became the runners-up after losing to CSK in a nervy final. Shami had won the Purple Cap of the IPL 2022 season with 28 wickets to his name.
