The Indian Premier League (IPL) has evolved into becoming one of the most competitive tournaments in cricketing history. Ever since it’s inception in 2008, the IPL has helped the cricketing world nurture new talents. It is in fact a breeding ground for up and coming cricketers, with the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill being the best of examples.
Apart from winning the IPL trophy, however, even the prize money also matters. During the early years of the IPL, in 2008 and 2009, the tournament winners received Rs 4.8 crore whereas the runners-up won a total of Rs 2.4 crore.
In 2010, this amount increased to Rs 10 crore for the winners and Rs 5 crore for the runners-up. Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians were IPL champions between 2010 and 2013 and each of these title-winning teams received Rs 10 crore each. By 2014, the tournament became even more established with more sponsors coming in, and as a result the winners prize money surged to Rs 15 crore and Rs 10 crore for the runners up.
This trend continued till the 2017 season. By 2019, this amount became Rs 21 crore for the winners and Rs 12.5 crore for the runners up. However, the COVID-19 pandemic affected the prize money distribution in 2020, with this amound going down to Rs 10 crore for the winners and Rs 6.25 crore for the runners up.
In 2021, the year when CSK won their fourth title, this once again increased to Rs 20 crore for the champions and Rs 12.2 crore for the losing finalists. In the period between the 2022 and 2023 seasons, the winners continued to receive Rs 20 crore whereas the runners-up received Rs 13 crore.
