Shreyas Iyer has found himself in the news following his exclusion from the Indian Test squad against England. Iyer was selected for the first two Tests, but was then dropped from the side for the final three games. After it was initially reported that the batsman was experiencing fitness issues, his availability for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) became doubtful. According to the latest reports, Iyer will be participating in Kolkata Knight Riders’ pre-season training camp.

After being excluded from the central contract list for 2023-24, released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) last month, Iyer has been subject to a lot of criticism. His decision to miss the Ranji Trophy quarter-finals for Mumbai led to immense chatter and off-field noise surrounding Iyer’s commitment to domestic cricket. The middle-order batter returned for the semi-finals against Vidarbha and played in the final to help Mumbai extend their Ranji Trophy title record. Iyer scored a fantastic 95 in the second innings of the Ranji Trophy final.

Iyer had reported feeling soreness in his back and had scans after the Ranji Trophy final. The scan results are not conclusive, according to sources close to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). The precise diagnosis will be known as soon as the MCA receives word from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, according to a report from Cricbuzz.

“There is no cause for concern; he is fine and will be going to Kolkata for the pre-IPL camp in two days,” Mumbai team manager Bhushan Patil was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

While it remains to be seen whether BCCI will reconsider their decision to drop Shreyas Iyer from the central contract list in the near future, Iyer will be keen to deliver an excellent showing in the upcoming IPL 2024. The 29-year-old is set to lead KKR and will be aiming to help the franchise win their first IPL title after 10 years. With the 2024 T20 World Cup slated to begin after the conclusion of IPL, Iyer will want to score runs in abundance and force himself back into the national reckoning. KKR will play their first game of the IPL 2024 season against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Eden Gardens on March 23.
