The 10 Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises have reportedly asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to impose a two-year ban on players who withdraw from a season without legitimate cause after being bought at the auction. The IPL franchises have also recommended making registering for mega auctions mandatory for overseas players instead of just entering mini-auctions in the hope of a mega deal.
These two demands were made by all 10 franchises virtually during their meeting with BCCI on 31 July which was held to decide the rules for the next auction, player retention, and RTM (Right To Match) option, as per a report in ESPNCricinfo.
The franchises told BCCI that they are ready to adjust if there is clarity on player’s availability for the season at the time of the auction. Also, the IPL teams would not mind if the players are pulled out by their respective boards for international matches or if the player pulls out due to injury or family commitments.
The major reason behind IPL teams making such a recommendation is that a late withdrawal after auction and just before the season greatly impacts the franchises’ strategies which have been made keeping the overseas players in consideration. Also, it’s difficult to find suitable replacements.
The IPL teams are not happy that the overseas players don’t take part in mega auctions but put their name forward for mini auctions where there is a dearth of top-class options. In the last mega auction in 2022, Ishan Kishan was the highest-paid player at Rs 15.25 crore but in the last mini auction Mitchell Starc fetched Rs 24.75 crore and Pat Cummins took home Rs 20.50 crore.
As per the report, the franchises felt that “players and their managers were attempting to game the system” and IPL needs to put an end to it. They suggested the established players should enter the mega auction and if they go unsold, they can enter the mini auction.
