The deadline for Indian Premier League (IPL) player retentions ahead of the mega auction for the 2025 season has been reportedly set as 31 October. According to a Cricbuzz report, all ten teams have to finalise their list of retained players by 5 pm IST on 31 October.

The BCCI recently announced the IPL player regulations for the 2025-27 period, which included allotting a total of six player retentions for each franchise, either through the traditional retention method or the Right to Match (RTM) card. The franchises can retain a maximum of five capped players, that includes both Indian and overseas, as well as a maximum of two uncapped players.

IPL rules |  How many players can a franchise retain? What is the total purse for each team?

Every uncapped player is retained for Rs 4 crore, a value that is deducted from the team’s auction purse. The amount of the auction purse has surged by Rs 20 crore and now the purse stands at Rs 120 crore for each team.

“The six retentions/RTMs can have a maximum of five capped players and a maximum of two uncapped players,” an IPL release said.

It is also to note that for retention purposes, a player who makes his international debut on or before 31 October will be considered as a capped player. However, should the player be retained as an uncapped player and goes onto make his international debut before auction day, then he would be treated as an uncapped player, and only Rs 4 crore would be reduced from the team’s auction purse.

The IPL also reintroduced a rule that the tournament had done away with in 2021. This is with regards to allowing players who retired from international cricket five years ago, to enter the auction as an uncapped player. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) can use this option to retain MS Dhoni, who played his final international match for India in the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final against New Zealand.
