Punjab Kings seamer Harshal Patel won the Purple Cap at the end of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) after collecting 24 wickets in 14 appearances across the 17th season of the league. This is the second time he’s won the award, having done so with his 32 wickets for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in 2021.

Patel finished comfortably ahead of the rest of the pack after collecting 2/49 in four overs against Sunrisers Hyderabad in PBKS’ final game of the season on 19 May. His 24 wickets come at an average and economy of 19.87 and 9.73 respectively.

Kolkata Knight Riders leg-spinner Varun Chakravarthy finished at the second spot with 21 wickets after dismissed SRH’s Shahbaz Ahmed in the final in Chennai on 26 May, finishing with figures of 1/9 from two overs.

At the third spot is Mumbai Indians pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who collected 20 wickets in 13 appearances across the season. Bumrah had been leading the pack for quite some time this season before getting overtaken by Patel and Chakravarthy towards the end.

SRH speedster T Natarajan and KKR pacer Harshit Rana finished at the fourth and fifth spots respectively with 19 wickets each, the latter finishing among the top five after collecting 2/24 in the final.

Also finishing with 19 wickets at the end of the season were Rajasthan Royals’ Avesh Khan, Punjab Kings’ Arshdeep Singh and KKR’s Andre Russell — who jumped to the eighth spot after his match-winning haul of 3/19 against SRH in the final.

Avesh, Arshdeep and Andre finished sixth, seventh and eighth respectively in the list while rounding off the top 10 were SRH pacer-captain Pat Cummins and RR leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal with 18 wickets each.

Gujarat Titans pacer Mohammed Shami had won the Purple Cap last season after collecting 28 wickets in 17 appearances across the season. The Titans, in fact, ended up sweeping the top three in the leading wicket-takers’ list that season with pace colleague Mohit Sharma and leg-spinner Rashid Khan finishing second and third respectively with 27 wickets each, the former finishing with a better average and economy.
