Mumbai Indians were on Wednesday knocked out of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) after Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) thumped Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 10 wickets in Hyderabad. MI, who currently have eight points from 12 games and are in ninth place, can only get to 12 points if they win their last two matches. That won’t be enough as the win on Wednesday took SRH’s points tally to 14 from 12 matches. SRH are in third place.
Mumbai Indians had appointed Hardik Pandya as skipper ahead of IPL 2024. He had replaced Rohit Sharma, who had led MI to five IPL titles. MI, however, endured a forgettable start to their campaign, losing their first three matches before clinching wins against Delhi Capitals (DC) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). However, the Mark Boucher-coached side continued to be inconsistent, losing four matches in a row that hurt their chances big time.
On Monday, however, MI had revived their slim hopes with a seven-wicket win over SRH, courtesy an unbeaten century from Suryakumar Yadav as they chased 174.
MI next take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Saturday before rounding off their campaign against Lucknow Super Giants at home on 17 May.
Gujarat Titans are in 10th place with eight games as well, albeit having played a game less than MI.
Coming to the SRH vs LSG game, the Pat Cummins-led side were set a target of 166. Openers Abhishek Sharma (75*) and Travis Head (89*) employed their merciless batting approach yet again as SRH chased down the total in only 9.4 overs.

More ShortsEarlier, LSG had won the toss and opted to bat. It was a rather slow start from Lucknow Super Giants as they were restricted to 27/2 in the powerplay. Bhuvneshwar Kumar had removed Quinton de Kock in the third over and he struck once again a couple of overs later to see off Marcus Stoinis, who was caught by Sanvir Singh at mid-on.
KL Rahul then attempted to revive the visitors and all he could do was forging a 36-run stand with Krunal Pandya before being dismissed for 29 by Pat Cummins in the 10th over.
LSG seemed to be in trouble at 66/4 in the 12th over when Pandya was run-out by Cummins at the non-striker’s end, but what followed was a valiant fightback from Nicholas Pooran (48*) and Ayush Badoni (55*) who forged a 99-run stand for the fifth wicket. LSG were restricted to 165/4 from 20 overs.
For Head and Abhishek, it was all about aggression from the word go. SRH reached 107/0 in the powerplay phase, which was the second-highest powerplay score of this season after their score of 125/0 against Delhi Capitals earlier this season. From then on, it took less than four overs for SRH to chase down the total against LSG.
