Gujarat Titans (GT) were on Monday eliminated from the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) after their home game against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Ahmedabad was washed out without a ball being bowled due to torrential rain. The abandonment leaves GT in eighth place with 11 points from 13 matches with just one match remaining.
Even if they beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on 16 May, GT can only get to 13 points which won’t be enough for qualification. GT, who were captained by Shubman Gill after Hardik Pandya’s departure, have so far won just five matches out of 13.
This is for the first time in their three-year history that GT have been knocked out in the league stages of the IPL. GT, under Hardik Pandya, went onto lift the title in their maiden season in 2022, and reached the final last year, where they lost to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a rain-curtailed game.
KKR, meanwhile, are all but assured of a top-two spot in the IPL playoffs, meaning that they will play the Qualifier 1 game in Ahmedabad on 21 May. The Shreyas Iyer-led outfit are currently leading the points table with 19 points from 13 matches. They play Rajasthan Royals (RR) in their final league game on 19 May.
The washout at the Narendra Modi Stadium also means that the Delhi Capitals vs Lucknow Super Giants game in Delhi on Tuesday will be a knockout contest with the loser being eliminated.
