A brilliant outing against England in the five-match series helped young India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal climb from 10th to eighth spot in the ICC Test batting Rankings. Jaiswal’s stellar batting earned him the Player of the Series award as well. He even emerged as the second Indian batter to score 700 or more runs in a single Test series after legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar. The former India skipper had achieved this feat on two occasions – in 1971 and in 1978/79 – both times against the West Indies. Gavaskar recently recalled an anecdote about Jaiswal. The legendary India cricketer revealed that he had once reprimanded Jaiswal for throwing away his wicket.
“It felt very nice to see Yashasvi getting all those runs and the manner in which he dominated the attack. I had mildly reprimanded him in the hotel elevator on Day 1 of the first Test in South Africa for throwing away his wicket in Trinidad (previous Test) after a good 50 plus score and told him never to do the bowlers any favour. Thankfully, he listened to me and got two big doubles in this series," Gavaskar said during an interaction with The Hindustan Times.
“He got three other half centuries and forgot what I had told him there. But hey, who listens to anyone when one is in his 20s? I didn’t either. Hopefully, he will go on to bigger things and never forgets that he is what he is because of Indian cricket," Gavaskar added.
Jaiswal capped off the Test series against England scoring 712 runs at an average of 89. The southpaw even notched two double-hundreds against the Ben Stokes-led side. Jaiswal also became just the third Indian cricketer to register multiple double tons in a single Test series after Virat Kohli and Vinoo Mankad. Apart from his two double hundreds, Jaiswal even scored three half-centuries.

Jaiswal was even named the ICC Player of the Month for his stupendous series of performances with the bat. The 22-year-old won the prestigious award overcoming New Zealand legend Kane Williamson. The Kiwi batter also had a remarkable outing in the South Africa Test series, claiming three centuries in four innings.
