They had demolished Sri Lanka by 302 runs at the Wankhede but their 243-run victory over the Proteas today was even more dominant. Today’s contest was supposed to be a battle of the equals but the scoreline suggests otherwise.

South Africa, meanwhile, remain second despite the defeat and are already through to the knockouts along with India, but will have the tough task of putting this disastrous performance behind them and starting afresh in the knockouts. They face Afghanistan in their final league outing, and will hope to regain their confidence with a victory in that game.
