India vs Pakistan, Asia Cup: Virat Kohli becomes quickest to 13,000 ODI runs and other stats from Super 4 clash

Virat Kohli and KL Rahul took the Pakistan attack to the cleaners on Monday, both batters slamming tons and stitching an unbroken partnership as India posted 356/2 on the board during the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4s clash. The pair had begun cautiously on Sunday after skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill had been dismissed in quick succession. It appeared Pakistan were mounting a comeback after the opening wicket partnership of 121 runs. Rahul and Kohli would begin on a cautious note after the game was moved to the reserve day because of incessant rain on Sunday. Rahul would go on to bring up the three-figure mark — his sixth in ODIs — in his first competitive appearance since May, making a grand return to the international stage ahead of the ODI World Cup. Kohli, meanwhile, would tee off in the slog overs of the Indian innings and eventually go past his batting partner to remain unbeaten on 122 off just 94 deliveries, the late burst helping the Men in Blue go past the 350-mark.

Kohli brought up his 47th ODI ton to inch closer to Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time record of 49 centuries in the format and taking his international century tally to 77. Read | Netizens hail Virat Kohli and KL Rahul's "outstanding" centuries In the process, the former India captain also ended up breaking another record — that of the fastest batter to 13,000 ODI runs, a record that had previously belonged to Tendulkar. Kohli, who was batting on eight overnight, needed another 90 runs to complete the 13K mark in ODIs, and eventually reached the milestone in the 48th over after moving to 99. He would then bring up the three-figure mark the very next delivery with a single off Shaheen Shah Afridi, taking 84 balls to bring up the milestone. Kohli breached the 13,000-mark in 267 innings, 54 fewer than previous record-holder Tendulkar. He also happens to be the quickest batter to 8000, 9000, 10000, 11000 and 12000 ODI runs as well.

Kohli is currently fifth in the all-time run-scorers’ list in ODIs with Tendulkar (18,426), Kumar Sangakkara (14,234), Ricky Ponting (13,704) and Sanath Jayasuriya (13,430) ahead of him in the list. Here are some of the other records broken and milestones achieved in the India-Pakistan Super Four contest: — The 233-run unbroken partnership between Kohli and Rahul is India’s highest for any wicket against Pakistan in ODIs. The previous best was 231 runs between Sachin Tendulkar and Navjot Singh Sidhu in 1996. — The partnership is also India’s second-highest for the third wicket in ODIs. — It is also the highest partnership in the history of the Asia Cup (ODI), going past the 224-run opening partnership between Pakistan’s Mohammad Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed against India in Dhaka in 2012. — India’s total of 356/2 is their joint-highest vs Pakistan in ODIs. They had made 356/9 during the home series in 2005 in Visakhapatnam. The 356 runs total is also the fourth-highest in Asia Cup history. — Virat Kohli has now struck four consecutive ODI hundreds at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Hashim Amla is the only other batter with four consecutive ODI tons at a venue, which he did at Centurion between 2015 and 2017 — Virat Kohli has four hundreds in ODI Asia Cup history. Kumar Sangakkara also scored four. Former Sri Lanka opener Sanath Jayasuriya leads the list with six Kohli would end up smashing two fours and a six off all-rounder Faheem Ashraf off the last three balls of the innings as the Men in Blue ended up crossing the 350-mark in the end. Read | What happens if India vs Pakistan Super Four clash gets washed out? It was a terrific comeback for the Indian top-order, which had been blown away by the Pakistan attack in Pallekele with the Men in Blue getting reduced to 66/4 at one stage. Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya came to India’s rescue in that match, scoring 82 and 87 respectively and stitching a 138-run opening stand for the fifth wicket as India posted 266 before incessant rain resulted in the game ending in a washout.
