World Cup 2023: Virat Kohli tallies more records, Shubman Gill quickest to 2,000 ODI runs and other stats

Virat Kohli dished out another masterclass in a run chase while Mohammed Shami shone on his comeback as India defeated New Zealand by four wickets to maintain their unbeaten run in the 2023 ICC World Cup. World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table In the showdown between the tournament’s remaining unbeaten teams at Dharamsala’s HPCA Stadium on Sunday, Kohli once again rose to the occasion with a brilliant knock under pressure, coming close to scoring two centuries inside three days. Kohli’s knock of 95 off 114 balls on Sunday helped the Men in Blue stroll to a four-wicket victory with two overs to spare, helping them collect five wins in as many outings and stay on top of the points table.

This was after Shami collected five wickets for 54 runs in his first appearance at the ongoing World Cup. Shami would pip Kohli to the Player of the Match award for his effort. As for the Black Caps, who suffered their first defeat of the tournament, all-rounder Daryl Mitchell stood tall with a knock of 130 — his fifth ODI hundred and his second in as many months. Mitchell forged a massive 159-run partnership with Rachin Ravindra (75), which had given the Black Caps hope of posting a total in excess of 300 at one point. **IND vs NZ | 'Important to stay in the present': Rohit Sharma** Looking back at the events of the 21st match of the ongoing World Cup, we take a look at some of the records broken and milestones achieved: — Shubman Gill became the fastest batter to 2,000 ODI runs during his knock of 26 off 31 deliveries. Gill took 38 innings to reach the milestone, two less than what South Africa’s Hashim Amla needed to get to the same mark. — Virat Kohli is now joint-second on the list of batters with most fifty-plus scores in World Cups. Kohli has 12, the same as Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara and Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan. Sachin Tendulkar tops the list with 21. [caption id=“attachment_13283782” align=“alignnone” width=“640”] Virat Kohli starred in another chase for India, this time scoring 95 off 114 against New Zealand. AP[/caption] — Virat Kohli became the fourth-highest all-time run-getter in ODI cricket. He now stands on 13,437 runs and leapfrogged Sanath Jayasuriya during the contest versus New Zealand. The former Sri Lanka captain scored 13,430 runs during his career. Top three in this list are Sachin Tendulkar (18,426 runs), Kumar Sangakkara (14,234 runs) and Ricky Ponting (13,704 runs). The next active batter in this list is Rohit Sharma all the way back on 10,423 runs — Virat Kohli became the first player to hit 3,000 runs in white-ball ICC matches. He has 3,054 runs in ICC World Cup, Champions Trophy and T20 World Cup events. Of the 3,054 runs, 1,384 runs have come at 50-over World Cups, 529 in Champions Trophy and 1,141 runs in T20 World Cup matches — Virat Kohli’s record in run-chases is exemplary. In numbers he now has most 50-plus scores in wins for India in international cricket. Kohli’s 95-run knock was 137th instance of fifty-plus score in a successful run chase. Tendulkar scored 136 fifty-plus totals in India’s wins throughout his career. — Rohit Sharma struck four sixes during his 40-ball 46 to become the batter with the second-most maximums in ICC World Cup history. He now has 40 sixes, two more than South Africa’s AB de Villiers, though he’s nine short of West Indies’ Chris Gayle who remains at the top of the list. — India’s chase of the 274-run target set by New Zealand is their joint-third highest successful chase in a World Cup match. They had also chased down 274 against Pakistan at Centurion in 2003. [caption id=“attachment_13284022” align=“alignnone” width=“640”] India pacer Mohammed Shami (centre) celebrates with Jasprit Bumrah after dismissing New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell to complete his five-for during their ICC World Cup match in Dharamsala. AP[/caption] — Mohammed Shami became the first Indian bowler to register more than one five-for in the ICC World Cup. Kapil Dev, Venkatesh Prasad, Robin Singh, Ashish Nehra and Yuvraj Singh have one five-for each. — Shami also has the joint-second-most four-wicket hauls in ICC World Cups alongside South Africa’s Imran Tahir. Australia’s Mitchell Starc leads the list with six four-fers. — The victory is India’s first against New Zealand in ICC events in 20 years. The Men in Blue had last beaten the Black Caps in the 2003 World Cup match in Centurion, where they had bundled the Stephen Fleming-led side out for 146 and overhauled the target in a little over 40 overs with seven wickets to spare.
