India vs New Zealand, World Cup 2023: Kohli shatters Tendulkar's records, Shami scales new heights and more stats

Records were broken and milestones achieved as India defeated New Zealand by 70 runs in the first semi-final of the 2023 Cricket World Cup in Mumbai on Wednesday. World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table Virat Kohli (117) and Shreyas Iyer (105) scored centuries to guide India to 397 after they elected to bat. Shubman Gill (93) too played a promising knock before being retired hurt due to cramps.

However, Daryl Mitchell’s (134) century and Kane Williamson’s (69) fifty would eventually go in vain, as Mohammed Shami (7/57) dominated proceedings in the latter half of the chase, to rattle the Kiwis out for 327. It was a chase that saw its twists and turns, but in the end it was the Men in Blue’s resilience couple with Shami’s bowling that helped India reach a fourth World Cup final. The hosts will take on the winner of Thursday’s second semi-final between South Africa and Australia in the final in Ahmedabad on Sunday. Let’s now take a look at some notable records that were achieved during the first semi-final: —With his century, Virat Kohli surpassed Sachin Tendulkar for most centuries in ODI cricket. Kohli now has 50 centuries in ODIs, while Tendulkar had finished his career with 49 ODI tons. —Virat Kohli also surpassed Sachin Tendulkar for another record. With 711 runs in this World Cup so far, Kohli has already set the record for most runs by a batter in a single edition of the World Cup. Tendulkar had amassed 673 runs at the 2003 World Cup in South Africa —Mohammed Shami set the best figures by an Indian bowlers in ODIs when he finished with figures of 7/57. He bettered Stuart Binny’s figures of 6/4 against Bangladesh in Mirpur in 2014. —Mohammed Shami also became the first Indian to take 50 World Cup wickets. He also became the fastest bowler to do so, getting to the milestone in 17 innings. Australia’s Mitchell Starc had done so in 19 innings. —Rohit Sharma broke Chris Gayle’s record for most sixes in World Cups. Rohit has 51 maximums in World Cups so far, whereas Chris Gayle had finished with 49 sixes. —Shreyas Iyer’s 67-ball century was the quickest by any batter in World Cup knockout stages. He beat Adam Gilchrist’s record, who had taken 72 balls to reach his ton during the 2007 World Cup final against Sri Lanka. —India’s total of 397/7 became the highest score by any side in World Cup knockout matches. New Zealand’s total of 393/6 against West Indies in the quarter-final of the 2015 World Cup was the previous best. —With knocks of 117 and 105 respectively, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer became only the second duo to score centuries in the knockout match of a World Cup. Tilakaratne Dilshan (108*) and Upul Tharanga (102*) were the only other duo to have done so, when they slammed centuries against England in the quarter-final of the 2011 World Cup.
