That's all we have for today. Hope you've enjoyed our coverage. Nothing like a good day of Test cricket. We'll be back again tomorrow with the Day 4 blog starting at 3 am IST.

Big day for India as they look to save the match. New Zealand will be hoping to get the job done by tomorrow. We hope to see you again. Have a good one!

12:15 (IST)

A hard fought day's of Test cricket comes to an end and New Zealand will be the happier between the two teams. Firstly, their tail stretched the lead to 183 and later as a bowling unit, they kept the Indian batsmen under control. Meanwhile, the talking point of the day has to be their short-pitched bowling that kept the Indians on their toes.

A good day of cricket in Wellington and it's the home team having the advantage in the first Test. After scoring 348 in their first innings thanks to some solid contributions from the lower-order, the bowlers managed to pick important top order wickets of India. At stumps, Rahane and Vihari remained unbeaten with India still 39 runs behind. Plenty of work to do tomorrow.

12:05 (IST)

After 65 overs,India 144/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 25 , Hanuma Vihari 15)

Jamieson with the ball. He's bowling around the stumps, targetting Vihari with short stuff. The batsman is happy to let the balls got the keeper. He gets the bat to a short ball and it's in the air but falls short of leg gully. Replays show the ball actually hits the gloves but the batsman is not holding the bat. It would've been a not out. A four to end the day's play.

FOUR! Short stuff and Vihari cuts it for a boundary. End of the over.

12:00 (IST)

After 64 overs,India 140/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 25 , Hanuma Vihari 11)

Boult to Rahane. Around the wicket and he's bowling the fourth-stump line. Not much movement so Rahane is able to block it with ease. The third ball is pitched up as Rahane bends hin knee and finds gap in the gully for a double. The vice-captain wants a single after pushing the ball to the leg-side but Vihari says no. Boult then comes over the wicket and targets the pads, with Rahane blocking it. Another dot to end the over. Looks like we will have time for one more over.

11:56 (IST)

After 63 overs,India 138/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 23 , Hanuma Vihari 11)

Jamieson continues. He's getting the ball to bounce but not enough pace in the deliveries. Tries a slower bouncer in the third ball but Rahane ducks under it. Jamieson goes around the wicket, trying the short-pitched deliveries, but nothing comes out of them. A single off the final ball.

11:52 (IST)

After 62 overs,India 137/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 22 , Hanuma Vihari 11)

Boult is now back into the attack. Vihari with the push towards the off-side and wants a single, but Rahane says no. Boult tries for the yorker in his fourth ball, but it ends up being a low full-toss. Vihari tries to flick it but doesn't get the timing. It's a maiden.

11:48 (IST)

After 61 overs,India 137/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 22 , Hanuma Vihari 11)

Jamieson starts off with a bouncer, Vihari is happy to leave it. The fifth ball is bit fuller and Vihari pushes the ball towards the point region for a single. Rahane tries for the upper cut in the final ball but misses it. Just one run from the over.

11:43 (IST)

After 60 overs,India 136/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 22 , Hanuma Vihari 10)

Southee continues his spell. After four dots, Vihari plays his off-drive and runs for a quick single. The throw from mid-off is off target else it could've been trouble for him. Just one run from the over.

Latest Updates, 1st Test, Day 3 India vs New Zealand: A good day of cricket in Wellington and it's the home team having the advantage in the first Test. After scoring 348 in their first innings thanks to some solid contributions from the lower-order, the bowlers managed to pick important top order wickets of India. At stumps, Rahane and Vihari remained unbeaten with India still 39 runs behind. Plenty of work to do tomorrow.

Day 2 report: Captain Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor combined to put New Zealand in a strong position in the first Test before India struck back late on Saturday to remove both just as their partnership threatened to take the match away from the tourists.

New Zealand were 216-5 and with a lead of 51 runs at the end of the second day’s play at the Basin Reserve with the failing light forcing the players off.

Play had been extended by half an hour past the 7 pm (0600 GMT) finishing time, itself a 30-minute extension on the playing conditions, with Colin de Grandhomme on four and BJ Watling 14 not out.

India had been dismissed for just 165 earlier on Saturday and looked under pressure all day but it could have been much worse had they not removed Taylor and Williamson, who were looking ominous, in quick succession.

The pair combined for 93 runs and had given New Zealand a first innings lead before Ishant Sharma broke the partnership.

The pace bowler got a delivery to spit off a length and struck Taylor on the hand, with the ball flying to Cheteshwar Pujara at square leg to dismiss him for 44.

Williamson, who had been struck on the hand by a Sharma bouncer on the first ball he faced and received treatment, looked content to see out the rest of the day’s play without any further loss after Taylor’s dismissal.

He advanced to 89 and within sight of his 22nd Test century but drove at a wide delivery from Mohammed Shami, was surprised by the slower pace of the ball and caught by substitute fielder Ravindra Jadeja at cover.

Henry Nicholls was then caught by Virat Kohli at slip off Ravichandran Ashwin for 17 in the gloomy conditions.

“You always want or are seeking perfection,” pace bowler Tim Southee told reporters of the match situation heading into day three. “You always want to be one less wicket than what you are.

“But saying that if we can carry on tomorrow morning and get a couple of partnerships together and try to build that lead then going into the second innings that will be nice.”

Southee had run through India’s tail with three wickets after they had resumed on 122-5 after the entire final session of the first day was washed out when heavy rain swept across the ground seconds after the players had taken tea.

Debutant Kyle Jamieson finished with 4-39.
