India vs New Zealand, Highlights, 1st Test Day 3 at Wellington: Rahane, Vihari dig in to guide visitors to 114 for 4 at Stumps

Highlights

12:19 (IST)

That's all we have for today. Hope you've enjoyed our coverage. Nothing like a good day of Test cricket. We'll be back again tomorrow with the Day 4 blog starting at 3 am IST.

Big day for India as they look to save the match. New Zealand will be hoping to get the job done by tomorrow. We hope to see you again. Have a good one!

12:15 (IST)

A hard fought day's of Test cricket comes to an end and New Zealand will be the happier between the two teams. Firstly, their tail stretched the lead to 183 and later as a bowling unit, they kept the Indian batsmen under control. Meanwhile, the talking point of the day has to be their short-pitched bowling that kept the Indians on their toes.

A good day of cricket in Wellington and it's the home team having the advantage in the first Test. After scoring 348 in their first innings thanks to some solid contributions from the lower-order, the bowlers managed to pick important top order wickets of India. At stumps, Rahane and Vihari remained unbeaten with India still 39 runs behind. Plenty of work to do tomorrow.

12:05 (IST)

After 65 overs,India 144/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 25 , Hanuma Vihari 15)

Jamieson with the ball. He's bowling around the stumps, targetting Vihari with short stuff. The batsman is happy to let the balls got the keeper. He gets the bat to a short ball and it's in the air but falls short of leg gully. Replays show the ball actually hits the gloves but the batsman is not holding the bat. It would've been a not out. A four to end the day's play.

12:04 (IST)

FOUR! Short stuff and Vihari cuts it for a boundary. End of the over.

12:00 (IST)

After 64 overs,India 140/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 25 , Hanuma Vihari 11)

Boult to Rahane. Around the wicket and he's bowling the fourth-stump line. Not much movement so Rahane is able to block it with ease. The third ball is pitched up as Rahane bends hin knee and finds gap in the gully for a double. The vice-captain wants a single after pushing the ball to the leg-side but Vihari says no. Boult then comes over the wicket and targets the pads, with Rahane blocking it. Another dot to end the over. Looks like we will have time for one more over.

11:56 (IST)

After 63 overs,India 138/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 23 , Hanuma Vihari 11)

Jamieson continues. He's getting the ball to bounce but not enough pace in the deliveries. Tries a slower bouncer in the third ball but Rahane ducks under it. Jamieson goes around the wicket, trying the short-pitched deliveries, but nothing comes out of them. A single off the final ball.

11:52 (IST)

After 62 overs,India 137/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 22 , Hanuma Vihari 11)

Boult is now back into the attack. Vihari with the push towards the off-side and wants a single, but Rahane says no. Boult tries for the yorker in his fourth ball, but it ends up being a low full-toss. Vihari tries to flick it but doesn't get the timing. It's a maiden.

11:48 (IST)

After 61 overs,India 137/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 22 , Hanuma Vihari 11)

Jamieson starts off with a bouncer, Vihari is happy to leave it. The fifth ball is bit fuller and Vihari pushes the ball towards the point region for a single. Rahane tries for the upper cut in the final ball but misses it. Just one run from the over.

11:43 (IST)

After 60 overs,India 136/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 22 , Hanuma Vihari 10)

Southee continues his spell. After four dots, Vihari plays his off-drive and runs for a quick single. The throw from mid-off is off target else it could've been trouble for him. Just one run from the over.

11:39 (IST)

After 58 overs,India 135/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 22 , Hanuma Vihari 9)

Not a great over from Jamieson. The pace is missing from the first three balls, bowling short and outside off. Rahane makes most of the loose deliveries. He then switches to bowling full, and this is much better from the pacer. Eight runs from the over.

11:35 (IST)

One more four! Rahane with another cut shot to pierce the gap on the off-side.

11:34 (IST)

FOUR! Short and width from Jamieson and Rahane cuts it really well for a boundary.

11:34 (IST)

After 58 overs,India 127/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 14 , Hanuma Vihari 9)

Southee to Rahane. Anything outside off, Rahane is happy letting it go. The ones on the stumps is defended well. The fourth ball is short one and Rahane goes for the pull. One bounce to the deep square-leg fielder and it results in a single. For a change, it's not a maiden.

11:30 (IST)

After 57 overs,India 126/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 13 , Hanuma Vihari 9)

Jamieson is now into the attack. After bowling back of the length deliveries, he goes fuller in the fourth ball, drawing Vihari forward and making him play the shot. The ball misses the bat and carries to the keeper. A short ball to end the over and the maiden streak continues. Fifth on a trot.

11:25 (IST)

After 56 overs,India 126/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 13 , Hanuma Vihari 9)

Southee runs in to bowl his 13th over of the innings. Nasty bouncer with the ball hitting Rahane's helmet while he's trying to play the pull. The physio is in and checking on the batsman. Nothing to worry, and good to see Rahane smiling along with Williamson. More blocks and it's another maiden over.

11:23 (IST)

De Grand enabler

11:20 (IST)

Currently Rahane and Vihari are on a "blockathon" mode. They almost presenting dead bat to everything. But in this game, don't think that is the right approach, especially when you are trailing by a huge margin. Ideally they should have looked for run-scoring opportunities more frequently. Looks like both the batsmen are playing for the Stumps.

11:18 (IST)

After 55 overs,India 126/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 13 , Hanuma Vihari 9)

De Grandhomme continues. His first ball is a good bouncer as Vihari prefers to leave it to the keeper. The second ball is on the stumps, with Vihari blocking it with front foot defence. The fourth ball is pitched up, with an hint of movement. Vihari reads the delivery well and lets it go. Two blocks to end the over.

11:16 (IST)

After 54 overs,India 126/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 13 , Hanuma Vihari 9)

Tim Southee is back into the attack and he starts off with a widish delivery, bit short on length. The next ball is a beauty as  Rahane plays and misses it. The ball moving away just enough. No runs from the over.

11:11 (IST)

After 53 overs,India 126/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 13 , Hanuma Vihari 9)

De Grandhomme to Vihari. This time, the bowler is attacking the stumps but Vihari is watchful. He's taking his time in the middle, not chasing the boundaries. He wants to keep his wicket till end of play. An outswinger to end the over as Vihari leaves the ball away.

11:08 (IST)

After 52 overs,India 126/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 13 , Hanuma Vihari 9)

Boult to Vihari. Good length balls with bit of bounce, but Vihari is looking confident with his blocks. Goes for the off-side drive against fuller delivery but it is straight to the fielder. Quick single off the last ball.

11:04 (IST)

After 51 overs,India 125/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 13 , Hanuma Vihari 8)

de Grandhomme continues with his spell. He's sticking to the off-side line but not causing enough trouble to the batsmen. Maybe Williamson should look to give him some rest. Two runs from the over.

11:00 (IST)

After 50 overs,India 123/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 12 , Hanuma Vihari 7)

Push from Vihari to mid-off it results in a single. While running, both batsmen were ball watching and it leads to some sort of confusion but no harm done. Boult bowls a beauty to Rahane with the ball moving away just enough to beat the bat. Rahane then slaps one to the mid-wicket but the short fielder gets his hands to the ball, only for a single. A four to end the over.

11:00 (IST)

FOUR! Down the leg from Boult and Vihari flicks it with soft hands. No protection down the fine leg.

10:56 (IST)

Virat Kohli on this New Zealand tour so far:

T20Is : 45, 11, 38, 11
ODIs: 51, 15, 9
This Test: 2, 19

10:56 (IST)

After 49 overs,India 117/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 11 , Hanuma Vihari 2)

de Grandhomme bowls the first over post the drinks break. Bowling fuller and targetting the stumps. There's a appeal in the third ball for caught behind but umpire Dar says no. It is followed by a LBW appeal against Rahane but again, Dar is unimpressed. Rahane then takes a double after finding the space in the gully region.

10:48 (IST)

After 48 overs,India 115/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 9 , Hanuma Vihari 2)

Boult continues his spell. Comes up with two good bouncers as Vihari lets them go to the keeper. The next ball comes back in with a chance for LBW, but the bat hits the ball first. For the next ball, Boult goes around the wickets and targets the stumps. Another bouncer to end the over. Time for drinks now.

10:44 (IST)

After 47 overs,India 115/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 9 , Hanuma Vihari 2)

de Grandhomme to Vihari. Fuller one and the ball hits Vihari's pads. The New Zealand players appeal for LBW but Aleem Dar says no. Williamson takes the review and DRS shows the ball is missing the stumps so Vihari stays for now. Goes for a good-looking drive on the off-side but short covers stops the ball with a good fielding effort. A single off the last ball.

10:39 (IST)

After 46 overs,India 114/4 ( Ajinkya Rahane 9 , Hanuma Vihari 1)

Boult back into the attack. The first ball is pitched up and Kohli goes for the drive but the fielder is at the right spot to stop the boundary. Kohli wants to play positive cricket but it results in his downfall. Should've left the short ball. Hanuma Vihari walks in and almost sees his stumps shattered. The ball comes back in and narrowly misses the stumps. He's off the mark with a single down the mid-wicket.

10:35 (IST)

OUT!

BIG WICKET OF VIRAT KOHLI!

Bouncer from Boult as Kohli goes for the pull but nicks the ball to the keeper. He knows he's out so didn't take the review.

10:33 (IST)

After 45 overs,India 113/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 19 , Ajinkya Rahane 9)

de Grandhomme to Rahane. The first ball is outside off and it's good leave from the vice-captain. The second and third balls are on the pads as Rahane blocks both the deliveries. After conceding the four, de Grandhomme brings back his line to bowling at stumps. Two dots to end the over.

10:32 (IST)

FOUR! Too wide from de Grandhomme and Rahane makes no mistake in dispatching the ball to the covers boundary.

10:29 (IST)

After 44 overs,India 109/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 19 , Ajinkya Rahane 5)

Jamieson continues his spell, coming around the wicket to Kohli. Takes a quick single after pushing the ball to covers. Rahane also plays a similar shot to sneak in another single. Three runs from the over.

10:24 (IST)

After 43 overs,India 106/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 18 , Ajinkya Rahane 4)

Colin de Grandhomme is into the attack now. The first one goes away from the stumps while the second ball comes back in a little. The skipper goes for a quick single after playing it down the leg to backward point region. Two blocks from Rahane to end the over.

10:21 (IST)

After 42 overs,India 105/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 17 , Ajinkya Rahane 4)

Jamieson coming around the wicket to Rahane. For the first ball, the batsman is bit late on the shot, taking the blow to the body. Goes for the pull in the fourth ball, but doesn't get the bat near the ball. Good short from Rahane to score the boundary against the short ball. Four runs from the over.

10:20 (IST)

FOUR!

Extra bounce from Jamieson as Rahane plays the upper punch to the off-side for a boundary.

10:17 (IST)

A waste of a review. Agarwal knew that he hit it. Nevertheless, it was a gutsy knock under the circumstances. Now it's up to the skipper and his deputy. India need one of these two, if not both to play a long innings. For New Zealand one wicket at this stage will more or less seal the deal.

10:17 (IST)
10:16 (IST)

After 41 overs,India 101/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 17 , Ajinkya Rahane 0)

Southee around the wicket to Virat Kohli. He's trying the same plan that worked against Mayank Agarwal. He won't show it but Kohli will be under pressure. One more wicket here and the team will be in lot of trouble. No runs from the over.

10:12 (IST)

After 40 overs,India 101/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 17 , Ajinkya Rahane 0)

Jamieson continues. The fitst two balls are bit wide and it resulted in a boundary. Jamieson corrects his line in the third ball. The fourth ball is on the pads and Kohli takes a quick single. Jamieson goes around the wicket to Rahane, bowling bit wide to the batsman. Bouncer to end the over.

10:10 (IST)

Tim Southee becomes the first player to take 300 wickets in New Zealand across formats, going past Daniel Vettori's 299 wickets.

Umang Pabari, Cricket statistician
10:10 (IST)
10:09 (IST)

FOUR! Too much width from Jamieson and Kohli punishes him with a cover drive.

10:08 (IST)

After 39 overs,India 96/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 12 , Ajinkya Rahane 0)

Southee sticks to bowling around the wicket. Mayank Agarwal goes for the full in the second ball and misses it completely. After bowling three short balls, Southee pitches the fourth one up and gets the nick. His plan worked again and India lose an important wicket. Ajinkya Rahane, the vice captain, is the new batsman.

10:08 (IST)

OUT!

Down the leg from Southee and Mayank nicks it while playing the flick and the catch is taken by the keeper. The New Zealand players start celebrating. Mayank is walking but decides to review the call at the last second. Replays show a spike so the third umpire sticks to the on-field umpire's call. Big wicket for the Kiwis. Mayank Agarwal c Watling b Southee 58(99).

09:59 (IST)

After 38 overs,India 96/2 ( Mayank Agarwal 58 , Virat Kohli (C) 12)

Jamieson to Kohli. Full and outside off, Kohli happy to let it go. Bowls the next one on the fifth stump line, again Kohli lets the ball go. The third ball is short and wide and straight to the keeper. Good front foot defence in the next one from the skipper. Two leaves to end the over. This is a good contest.

09:55 (IST)

After 37 overs,India 96/2 ( Mayank Agarwal 58 , Virat Kohli (C) 12)

Southee starts off with a bouncer. Mayank is happy to duck it. Southee comes around the wicket and targets the body of the batsman. Mayank plays it with soft hands. Similar delivery in the next one as Mayank tries to flick it away but the keeper stops the ball. Southee is sticking to the same length in the over. A four and a dot to end the over.

09:54 (IST)

FOUR! Short and Mayank with the pull to find the gap in the deep square-leg boundary.

09:50 (IST)

After 36 overs,India 92/2 ( Mayank Agarwal 54 , Virat Kohli (C) 12)

Jamieson continues. First one is short of length, outside off. Left alone by the batsman. The second ball is a bouncer, Kohli watches it closely and ducks. The next one is a good drive but it is straight to the mid-off fielder. The fifth ball is also produces the drive, but the timing is not right. Kohli is itching to get going but Jamieson is doing well. Another maiden.

09:49 (IST)

The Pujara wicket has once again pushed India on the backfoot. The partnership was holding the fort for them. However now once again the visitors need to rebuild. Perhaps, this is the perfect time for Virat Kohli, who has just one half-century on this tour, to showcase his class and lead the team from the front. With 30 odd overs left in this final session of the day, there is enough time for him to settle into his innings.

09:49 (IST)
09:46 (IST)

After 35 overs,India 92/2 ( Mayank Agarwal 54 , Virat Kohli (C) 12)

Southee to Kohli. The first ball is fuller in length and Kohli comes up with his forward defence. The second one is also fuller, Southee delivers from wide of the crease. Kohli lets it go to the keeper. Kohli then edges the next ball, trying to work it around the leg, but it's in the gap and goes for a boundary. The luck factor is with the Indian skipper today. Three singles to end the over.

Latest Updates, 1st Test, Day 3 India vs New Zealand: A good day of cricket in Wellington and it's the home team having the advantage in the first Test. After scoring 348 in their first innings thanks to some solid contributions from the lower-order, the bowlers managed to pick important top order wickets of India. At stumps, Rahane and Vihari remained unbeaten with India still 39 runs behind. Plenty of work to do tomorrow.

Day 2 report: Captain Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor combined to put New Zealand in a strong position in the first Test before India struck back late on Saturday to remove both just as their partnership threatened to take the match away from the tourists.

New Zealand were 216-5 and with a lead of 51 runs at the end of the second day’s play at the Basin Reserve with the failing light forcing the players off.

Play had been extended by half an hour past the 7 pm (0600 GMT) finishing time, itself a 30-minute extension on the playing conditions, with Colin de Grandhomme on four and BJ Watling 14 not out.

India had been dismissed for just 165 earlier on Saturday and looked under pressure all day but it could have been much worse had they not removed Taylor and Williamson, who were looking ominous, in quick succession.

The pair combined for 93 runs and had given New Zealand a first innings lead before Ishant Sharma broke the partnership.

The pace bowler got a delivery to spit off a length and struck Taylor on the hand, with the ball flying to Cheteshwar Pujara at square leg to dismiss him for 44.

Williamson, who had been struck on the hand by a Sharma bouncer on the first ball he faced and received treatment, looked content to see out the rest of the day’s play without any further loss after Taylor’s dismissal.

He advanced to 89 and within sight of his 22nd Test century but drove at a wide delivery from Mohammed Shami, was surprised by the slower pace of the ball and caught by substitute fielder Ravindra Jadeja at cover.

Henry Nicholls was then caught by Virat Kohli at slip off Ravichandran Ashwin for 17 in the gloomy conditions.

“You always want or are seeking perfection,” pace bowler Tim Southee told reporters of the match situation heading into day three. “You always want to be one less wicket than what you are.

“But saying that if we can carry on tomorrow morning and get a couple of partnerships together and try to build that lead then going into the second innings that will be nice.”

Southee had run through India’s tail with three wickets after they had resumed on 122-5 after the entire final session of the first day was washed out when heavy rain swept across the ground seconds after the players had taken tea.

Debutant Kyle Jamieson finished with 4-39.
