Team India produced a clinical effort with the ball on Thursday to crush defending champions England out of the 2024 T20 World Cup as the Men in Blue secured a 68-run win in the second semi-final in Guyana. The win means India have qualified for only their third T20 World Cup final and their first in ten years. The Rohit Sharma-led side will lock horns against South Africa in Saturday’s final in Barbados.

The India-England clash in Guyana was a repeat of the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final between the two same sides in Adelaide. India had suffered a humiliating 10-wicket loss back then but made sure that they would exact revenge for that loss.

England won the toss and opted to field. The toss was delayed by more than two hours due to rain in Guyana. India, however, suffered an early blow with the dismissal of Virat Kohli in the third over, with Reece Topley cleaning him up. India lost Rishabh Pant (4) too in the sixth over and as soon as the eighth over was bowled, there was a short rain delay, but that delay did not do much to hamper Rohit Sharma (57) and Suryakumar Yadav (47) as they forged 73 runs for the third wicket.

India were 124/4 in the 16th over following SKY’s dismissal but Hardik Pandya (23), Ravindra Jadeja (17*) and Axar Patel (10*) took them to 171/7.

In reply, England’s batters failed miserably as they were reduced to 39/3 in the powerplay. A majority of the batters, barring skipper Jos Buttler (23), Harry Brook (25) and Jofra Archer (21) lacked aggressiveness as the spin duo of Axar Patel (3/23) and Kuldeep Yadav (3/19) ruled the roost. Jasprit Bumrah (2/12) also chipped in with a couple of wickets as England were all out for 103 in 16.4 overs.

Several records, some memorable and some forgettable, were set during the India-England match in Guyana. We take a look at some of those here:

—Axar Patel hit the 500th six of the 2024 T20 World Cup when he pulled a slower ball from Chris Jordan over wide long-on for a maximum in the  20th over of India’s innings. This is the first-ever time that 500 sixes have been hit in an edition of a T20 World Cup.

—Kuldeep Yadav now has 200 wickets in T20 cricket. The wrist spinner becomes the 13th Indian bowler to do so.

—Virat Kohli’s score of 9 on Thursday against England is his lowest-ever in a T20 World Cup semi-final. Kohli had scored 72* against South Africa in 2014, 89 against West Indies in 2016 and 50 against England in 2022.

—Jasprit Bumrah closed in on Arshdeep Singh’s record of most wickets for India in an edition of the T20 World Cup. Arshdeep has taken 15 wickets already this edition and Bumrah’s two wickets on Thursday took his tally to 13.

—India’s 68-run win over England on Thursday was the fourth-biggest win for the Men in Blue in T20 World Cups. India had beaten England by 90 runs in 2012, Australia 73 runs in 2014 and Zimbabwe by 71 runs in 2022. This win is also the second-biggest win margin by a team in T20 World Cup knockout matches in terms of runs.

—India are closing in on South Africa for most wins in a single edition of a T20 World Cup. South Africa, with eight wins, currently hold that record and India are in second with seven wins.

—Thursday’s semi-final against England was their 11th straight win in a T20I. This is India’s second longest winning streak in the shortest format that began in December 2023, and can equal their record of 12 that they had maintained between November 2021 and February 2022.
