The 2024 T20 World Cup Group A match between India and Canada in Lauderhill, Florida will have a delayed start due to rain. The match, India’s final in the group stage, is a dead rubber with the Men in Blue having already qualified into the Super Eight stage and Canada already eliminated. India are unbeaten in all three matches they have played so far, having beaten Ireland, Pakistan and USA.

All of their three previous matches were held at the Nassau County International Stadium in New York, but now the action moves to Lauderhill in Florida, where India’s final group match is scheduled to be played.

However, there’s been a rain threat in the build-up towards the game. Having said that, it is to be noted that USA’s group stage match against Ireland was in fact washed out due to rain in Florida on Friday, and the India-Canada match could suffer the same fate on Saturday.

But even if the India-Canada match gets washed out on Saturday, that outcome won’t affect the Men in Blue. Why is that? We state the reasons:

Why washout vs Canada won’t affect India

India are on top of the Group A standings with six points from three matches. USA, meanwhile, qualified after having finished with five points from four matches. India have a Net Run Rate of +1.137 whereas USA have an NRR of +0.127. Canada are in fourth place with two points and an NRR of -0.493.

While the NRR will remain the same for both India and Canada despite a washout, that would take them to seven points and three points respectively.

India, though, need not worry about the standings even if the match ends in a washout since they have already qualified for the Super Eight stage. Irrespective of Saturday’s outcome, India have already qualified for the Super Eight stage as group winners even if the Men in Blue had finished second in Group A, they would have technically qualified as A1 since that was their pre-determined seeding ahead of the T20 World Cup. This rule applies to all those pre-seeded teams in a group who have qualified.

If a pre-seeded team fails to qualify for the Super Eight stage, that spot goes to the next best team who has qualified.

India are in Group 1 for the Super Eight stage along with Australia and Afghanistan. The team that finishes second in Group D (Either Bangladesh or Netherlands) will join them in Group 1. Group 2 comprises of South Africa, West Indies and USA, with England and Scotland in contention to qualify.
