Rohit Sharma-led Team India clinched their second consecutive win in the Super 8 stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup on Saturday. Just two days after beating Afghanistan by 47 runs, the Men in Blue produced yet another clinical display to outplay Bangladesh by 50 runs in Antigua .

India had been asked to bat by Bangladesh after the Tigers had won the toss. Although initially Bangladesh would have been somewhat relived of that decision as they got rid of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav within the first 10 overs, Hardik Pandya (50*) and Shivam Dube (34) revived India from a precarious position to take them to 196/5. Bangladesh, in reply, were restricted to 146/8.

Shakib Al Hasan gets wicket No 50

Bangladesh spinner Shakib Al Hasan joined an elite list on Saturday as he captured his 50th wicket in T20 World Cups when he removed Rohit Sharma in the fourth over. By doing so, the former captain became the first bowler to register a half-century of wickets in the history of T20 World Cups.

Shakib’s delivery was pitched on a fuller length, and Rohit, looking to play the slog, ended up top-edging it towards Jaker Ali, stationed at extra cover. Shakib is only one among the two players to have featured in every edition of the T20 World Cup since 2007, with the other cricketer being Rohit Sharma.

Tanzim Hasan strikes twice in same over

Tanzim Hasan Sakib, the right-arm pacer, finished with figures of 2/32 and both of his wickets came in the ninth over. In the first ball of the ninth over, Tanzim bowled a ripper of a delivery to clean up Virat Kohli.

Suryakumar Yadav then walked into bat at No 4, and while he cleared backward square leg boundary for a six off the first ball, Tanzim made use of the extra bounce on offer as SKY nicked it to the wicketkeeper Litton Das.

Hardik, Dube power India

Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube’s 53-run stand for the fifth wicket went a long way in determining the outcome of the match. India were 108/4 following Rishabh Pant’s dismissal, but Pandya fired on a cylinders as he went onto score a 27-ball fifty that took India to 196/5.

Dube, however,  got off to a sedate start before slamming three sixes off Shakib, Tanzim and Rishad Hossain. However, Dube was cleaned up by Rishad in the 18th over while going for yet another powerful shot.

Najmul Hossain Shanto leads the charge

By far, Bangladesh’s best bet in their bid to revive hopes against India was skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto. Shanto came into bat at No 3 following Litton Das’ dismissal in the fifth over.

In the ninth over, Shanto hit Hardik Pandya for a couple of sixes and followed it up with another six and a four off Jadeja later, but he lacked support from his partners before being seen off in the 16th over for 40 runs off 32 balls.

Kuldeep spins a web

Pitches in the Caribbean are known to be a spinners’ paradise. Kuldeep Yadav, the wrist-spinner, played his first match of this tournament against Afghanistan, finishing with figures of 2/32. However, against Bangladesh, the 29 year-old was even better as he took three wickets, to finish with 3/19.

Tanzid Hasan was Kuldeep’s first victim in the 10th over, after the former was struck LBW courtesy Kuldeep’s googly. Kuldeep struck again in the 12th over to remove Towhid Hridoy courtesy another LBW before sending off Shakib Al Hasan in the 14th who was caught at extra-cover.
