Ravichandran Ashwin picked up his 37th five-wicket haul Sunday to script the perfect homecoming as India defeated Bangladesh by 280 runs in the first Test at Chennai to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Ashwin, who had scored a century in the first innings, provided India with the first breakthrough on the morning of Day 4 that set the tone for a quick win.
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan had frustrated India with a gritty 48-run partnership. However, the defiance ended after around one hour of play on Sunday morning when Shakib was caught at the backward short leg after an inside edge off Ashwin.
It was Ashwin’s first over of the day.
Who else but Ashwin? 🤩

Ravindra Jadeja then joined the party as he picked up three wickets on Day 4 including that of Shanto who fought hard with a knock of 82, but could not stop the inevitable as Bangladesh lost their last five wickets for just 40 runs.
Ashwin, who did not take a single wicket in the first innings, finished the match with bowling figures of 6/88 in the final essay including taking wickets of Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taskin Ahmed on Day 4, while Jadeja took three wickets for 58.

More ShortsOn Day 3, Ashwin dismissed Shadman Islam, Mominul Haque, and Mushfiqur Rahim. Zakir Hasan was the only wicket that did not fall to Ashwin or Jadeja. He was removed by Jasprit Bumrah at the start of the chase on Saturday.
Earlier in the match, Ashwin scored 113 after India were asked to bat first in overcast conditions following Bangladesh’s toss win. This was Ashwin’s sixth Test hundred, as he put up a 199-run partnership with Jadeja (86), rescuing India from a precarious position after being reduced to 144/6 at his home ground.

India eventually posted 376 in the first innings and made easy work of Bangladesh, bowling them out on just 149 for a mammoth 227-run lead. Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets while Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, and Jadeja took two each.
India’s batting in the second essay belonged to Rishabh Pant who slammed a century on his return to Test cricket. He was playing in the five-day format for the first time since his car accident in 2022. But he gave no signs of being rusty as the swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batter took just 124 balls to get to his hundred.
Pant was well supported by Shubman Gill who scored 119 not out as India handed the visitors an improbable-looking 515-run target for win.
Bangladesh had come into the series high on confidence after a 2-0 win in Pakistan but India have shown that they are a different beast at home, having last lost a series in 2012.
The second and final Test will be played in Kanpur from 27 September.
