India vs Australia, Sydney Test, Day 2 stats wrap: Rishabh Pant conquers foreign shores, visitors' dominance with the bat and more

India buried a dispirited Australia under a mountain of runs with Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja adding a dash of aggression to the sedate proceedings on Day 2 of the fourth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. India put together their second-highest team total on Australian soil, piling up 622/7 declared on the second day of the match. Their highest team total, 705/7 declared, was also incidentally scored at this venue, in 2004. AP[/caption] In reply, Australia were 24/0 in the 10 overs that the deflated side had to face after toiling all day on the field. This was after series top-scorer Cheteshwar Pujara missed out on what would have been a well-deserved double hundred, ending at 193 off 373 balls, adding 63 runs to his overnight score. Wicketkeeper-batsman Pant became the first Indian wicketkeeper to claim a hundred Down Under with an unbeaten 159-run effort that came off 189 balls on the second day of the match. This was his second Test hundred, the first being in England earlier this year. It was a day of milestones and records at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Here’s a look at all the important numbers from Day 2 of the Sydney Test. - India scored 622/7d in the first innings of the Sydney Test which is their second-highest total in Tests in Australia. Their highest total is 705/7d which they scored at the same venue in 2004 in their first innings. The last time India scored 500-plus runs before this in a Test innings in SENA countries was way back in 2009 against New Zealand at Hamilton. - This is the first time a visiting team has declared in three consecutive Test innings in Australia. India declared in both the innings of the MCG Test. India’s three century stands in their first innings of this Test is also now the joint-most for them in a Test innings in Australia. - Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja’s stand of 204 runs for the seventh wicket is now the highest for India for 7th or lower wicket against Australia in Tests, going past Pujara-Saha’s stand of 199 at Ranchi in 2017. It is also the highest stand for the seventh wicket in Australia in Tests, eclipsing Greg Matthews-Graham Yallop’s stand of 185 runs for Australia against Pakistan at MCG in 1983. - Rishabh Pant became the first Asian keeper to score a Test ton in Australia. His unbeaten 159 is now the joint-highest for an Asian keeper outside Asia in Tests, equalling Mushfiqur Rahim’s 159 runs against New Zealand at Wellington in 2017. Pant also became the first Asian keeper to score 200-plus runs and take 20-plus catches in a Test series. His two centuries outside Asia in Tests are now the joint most for an Asian keeper outside Asia in Tests alongside Moin Khan and Mushfiqur Rahim. - Cheteshwar Pujara’s 193 runs in India’s first innings is now the fifth-highest by an Indian in Australia in Tests. He also became the third Indian after Rahul Dravid (619 runs in 2003/04) and Virat Kohli (692 runs in 2014/15) to score 500-plus runs in a Test series in Australia. He has scored 521 runs till now in the series at an average of 74.42. - No Indian player has now faced more balls than Cheteshwar Pujara (1258) in a Test series in Australia. The previous record was of 1203 balls faced by Rahul Dravid in 2003/04. He also holds the record of facing most balls in a series consisting a maximum of four Tests in Australia among visiting players, going past Herbert Sutcliffe who faced 1237 balls in a four-match Test series in Australia in 1928. - Nathan Lyon became the second spinner after Muttiah Muralitharan to take 50-plus wickets against India at home in Tests. - This was the second occasion when four Australia bowlers conceded 100-plus runs each, against an Asian team in a home Test innings. The only other instance happened in 1983 against Pakistan in 1983 at Adelaide. With inputs from PTI
